Vancouver's sizeable community of heroin addicts is being asked to sign up for free heroin in an attempt to reduce crime and the spread of disease.

Jim Boothroyd, spokesman for the North American Opiate Medications Initiative, said only those who have been addicted for five years and who have already tried to break the habit will be eligible.

"They're people who have tried at least twice to quit using methadone," said Boothroyd. "Only a small fraction of the people who apply will be eligible."

Based on successful programs in Europe and Australia, the $8.1-million NAOMI project aims to sign up 470 long-term addicts in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto out of Canada's estimated 60,000 to 90,000 heroin addicts.

A considerable number of Vancouver's break-ins, thefts from cars and fencing of stolen property are attributed to drug users.

Heroin addicts commonly have to come up with $200 a day or more for their habit.

Additionally, serious communicable diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis-C are often spread by addicts sharing needles.

Dr. Martin Schechter, an HIV/AIDS scientist at the University of B.C., said it would be unethical not to try to treat heroin addicts who have tried other methods and failed to kick the habit.

The free drugs are scheduled to be available by mid-March.

Read the article, it's going to be regulated. It's not like a walk-in clinic, where as Joe NoNothing out of Toledo is embraced with a warm welcome, handshake from the mayor, and two syringes of heroin.

Once the word gets out all the junkies will be moving here and getting wacked on smack paid for by the taxpayers...Our government must be high on this shit

Trouble is there is just a small section of Vancouver (skid row) but people perceive the whole city like that.I don't mind the homos getting married...it's their life but allowing free drugs is only going to make the problem worse and not better..

Man, sounds shitty.. Your city kind of reminds me of some places here, for example, San Francisco has some really moronic social programs on various drug addictions, but that whole city is whacko. I can understand the city not giving a fizzuck about marijuana and things like that(Vancouver gets props for that,lol) but I mean heroin? It just ruins peoples lives, I'd be ashamed of my leaders who allowed such a thing. (of course, I should probably expect the same damn thing soon in my country! )

Who cares if junkies are smoking crack or shooting up in a regulated facility? Sure, drug abuse is unfortunate, and it should not been anywhere, but this is the real world & the abuse of substances is here to stay. It's up to you to choose that enviornment. If you want it done in your own backyards (literally), aside your children's bus stop, on that park bench, so be it. But perhaps you can swallow your pride and the moral highground you stand upon, and realize a sedated junkie in the confines of professionals is much safer than those same zombies walking the streets free, shooting up wherever convenient.

Your government is not promoting it's use, contrary to what you think.They just know it's unavoidable, and trying to accomodate the dreadful/bad, with a little safety. :2 cents:

And I'm sure my friends up north don't appreciate their government giving away freebie-Heroin, you know why ? BECAUSE THEY ARE PAYING FOR IT! I think it's a pretty good idea ... I think they had a similar idea in sweden and it reduced the crime / infection rate a lot .
