100 Mpbs @ 1000 $/month

Have anybody seen this deal?
http://www.cogentco.com/home.html

This deal looks very interesting. I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of them hosting companies are using their deal.

Another reason why you hosting people should stop beeing so greedy and offer cheaper per gig rate.

pornsuite 11-27-2001 02:29 AM

well its cheap, but I only hear bad things about cogentco.

funkmaster 11-27-2001 02:56 AM

... now this is something new, great stuff, after all it canīt be that bad ... all of national-net.com runs through it ...

I did a traceroute on them and I haven't seen such a nice route for a long time.

It hits their backbone line right away after leaving my ISP's regular node path.

It seems their backbone goes all over the US.

How are they compared to other big players such as uunet, verio, qwest, etc?

I'm ready to FedEx my tower and hook up with them.

Timothy 11-27-2001 03:35 AM

You will get what you pay for.
$10 for 1 mbps is impossible. $100-$250 for 1mbps is reasonable. If you wanna try, go ahead. And don't forget to tell me the result after the first month http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

spacedog 11-27-2001 03:37 AM

You call that cheap!!
I get 100MBPs at $39.00 per month!

justsexxx 11-27-2001 03:51 AM

sure that cheap http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif LOL where?

spacedog 11-27-2001 04:09 AM

Do a traceroute on adultwebmastersinfo.com and surprise http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

How often are they down? How is their speed? They are on congentco...Congentco is a really good provider and definately is worth it as I host all my stuff on them and they have the best backbone routes http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

Mole 11-27-2001 04:37 AM

Well, you get what you pay for depends on where you shop.

These guys runs a major backbone so it's like buying straight from the factory instead of from 7-11 at the corner.

$10 for 1 Mbps might be impossible if you're a reseller, but it might be perfectly OK if you run the damn backbone.

Wanna know how I found out about them?

I did some traceroute on a few hosting companies who posted on this board and found they were using this deal.

I don't quite remember what hosting it was but I'm gonne dig it up.

I'm sure the people who are using this deal and re-sell it as virtual hosts and reap $2-4 per gig knows perfectly well who they are.

Fiber are abundant and getting cheaper and cheaper. 2002 is around the corner, so everybody should know that anything over $2 per gig is robbery. Hell, I'd consider $1.5 per gig expensive.

Yeah yeah yeah, you got 24 hour service and your operator girl is real cute and friendly.

If your facility is running smoothly, there's no need to ever call tech support.

Mole 11-27-2001 04:40 AM

I found it now. =)

If you wanna know how the link and service is, why not ask bythegighost.com

They're connected with these guys and I'm not sure, but they're probably using this $1000 per 100 Mbps deal.

funkmaster 11-27-2001 04:43 AM

... qualitythumbs, sure thing ... they are the best!!

Royaltee_Gee 11-27-2001 04:58 AM

its 3k usd for 100mbps i heard.

that 1k for 100mbps is if you order: 1000mbps

Royaltee_Gee 11-27-2001 04:59 AM

cogent is going bankrupt within 3-4 months though.

onlyreal 11-27-2001 05:10 AM

hi
cogentco is really good

but their problem is they oversell means they sell more than they have but hey how many of you can use 1000mpbs so they worth it

Mole 11-27-2001 05:33 AM

It's just business.

Most users will never use 100 Mbps. Maybe not even half, but a few will hit the limit.

Same as all airlines and hotels overbook.

oscer 11-27-2001 06:53 AM

Actually If you only Buy 100 megs you have to pay 3k a month

And you cannot Use it for Strictly adult Traffic you need to Have At least Half of what you have outgoing Incoming

Fiber is cheeeeeeeeeep. Cogent has a shitload of fiber. You figure it out.

We've had 5 dedicated boxes on a big fat Cogent pipe since August. Going on 4 months with zero Cogent downtime. Compared to our last provider, it's not only a bargain, it's a fucking miracle.

I haven't read the rest of the thread but it's for local usage ... They put the lines at your place. Thoses aren't commercial lines ...

missnglnk 11-27-2001 01:00 PM

First off, it's $1,000/month for business users, or what most people call 'eyes', you have to meet a specific traffic ratio to be billed at that rate, otherwise if you're wholesaling/hosting/whatever it's $3,000/month.

Secondly, you have to be in a building lit by Cogent, they will not bring FastEthernet to your door no matter how much bandwidth you order from them, your building has to have 6 unique tenants interested in Cogent in order for them to CONSIDER lighting your building.

I've heard too many people talk about getting Cogent, not understanding those 2 points, and then getting all pissy because they found out too late after they blabbed their mouth to hell and back, some even soothe theirselves by saying "Hey, they're going to go out of business anyway" *no fingers pointed here though*.

You don't roll out POPs in West Bumblefuck to serve only one customer, too many people think doing that and 'taking a loss' is an acceptable way of business, but it's not, hence why some ISPs are in trouble currently.

And as for the out of business part...I don't think Cogent is going under soon, after their merger with Allied Riser and buyout of Netrail, I don't think those are signs of a failing business.

On-top 11-27-2001 01:22 PM

Oscer and missnglnk are correct. You have to have a facility lit by Cogent in order to make use of those deals. Also, they are not big enough to handle all one direction bandwidth (such as for use as solely a web host). They have requirements about incoming/outgoing bandwidth ratios. With those requirements, it's not a scalable solution right now. Special deals are only going to get you to the 200-300 Mb/s level with them, and most hosts you deal with are well above that amount in one way traffic. So many of your web hosts go with good carriers with long standing service and business models. Also, if you're hosting with them, that 100Mb/s is going to cost you $3000 + machines + colo fees + ??.

Cogent does have a lot of cash, everyone has different experiences with their bandwidth, and no one is really confident in their business model. They lose a lot of money. If you want more info, let me know. ICQ: 15898919
