My Dentist gave me a lot of shit for drinking soda

I went to a new dentist as as soon as he looked at my teeth he said "So youre a soda drinker huh?". He said he could tell right away.

He said he's treated crack addicts and aids patiets, and soda drinkers have the worst teeth. He said soda is a double whammy because I guess the acid in the soda melts away at your teeth, and the sugar in the soda feeds the bacteria that also eats away at your teeth.

Of course after making me feel bad, I walk out and the girl who does the billing has a huge diet pepsi on her desk.

Raven 02-08-2005 03:35 PM

Soda is so bad for you on so many levels, not the least of which is the fact that your dentist is right.

beemk 02-08-2005 03:36 PM

hes right

PenisFace 02-08-2005 03:38 PM

So drinking 11 or 12 cans of pepsi in a 24 hour period is bad for my teeth? :(

Ummm, from crack addicts to aids patients? Never knew aids effected the teeth, that dentist would make me a little leary. Then to say soda drinkers have the worst teeth huh, guess while treating all the crack addicts and aids patients he never stumbled across a meth user.

The key to whatever you drink or eat is just brushing and flossing your damn teeth. The logic that soda is ohhh so bad is just humorous to say the least.
Yes soda has some acid in it, well so does alot of stuff we consume. It also have alot of sugar in it, same goes for alot of other foods. Though starches are much worse for your teeth than sugar, but hey sugar is evil.
In reality a garden salad with croutons dressed in lemon and oil would be much more damaging to your teeth than a soda would be if you do not brush and floss.

Mr Pheer 02-08-2005 04:00 PM

I would have walked out right then, and I've done it before. I dont go to the dentist to get lectured, and I tell them that up front.

Fuck it I'm an adult, I'll drink soda if I want. Its not like they are working on me for free, so do the work, shut up and get paid.

BIGTYMER 02-08-2005 04:05 PM

I better start drinking water...

My dentist gives me shit for smoking, eating sugar, drinking sodas, the only thing he doesn't say anything about is drinking alcohol. It actually cleans my teeth he says.

Why do the feel the need to lecture anyone. Without our bad habbits they would be working two jobs to pay off their student loans.

Hell I had a dentist for awhile that made candy as his hobby. :2 cents:

Dentists should be stoked people drink soda, it prolly affects the patients bill more than their teeth.

axelcat 02-08-2005 04:32 PM

just enjoy life wtf is soda really going to do to your teeth

BRISK 02-08-2005 04:41 PM

Just brush your teeth with the soda. :winkwink:

BradM 02-08-2005 04:43 PM

Not sure what soda is, but pop is really bad for your teeth.

colpanic 02-08-2005 04:45 PM

Dentist is right.

I had like 15 cavaties one time going to the dentist... the software company I had worked at for the past few years had free soda, but no dental plan :)

Quit drinking soda and no new cavaties.

flashfire 02-08-2005 04:47 PM

I think cola products are the worse

Vanilla DeVille 02-08-2005 04:56 PM

Damn, I love soda too! I drink some everyday...

J-Reel 02-08-2005 05:07 PM

I'm a cola addict :(

Do it more often then.
Cavaties are pretty damn simple to understand. Bacteria on your teeth (easily killed by nearly any mouthwash) will consume sugars and starches that are hanging around in your mouth, thus producing acids that will eat away at the enamel of your teeth.

(for some others)
simple logic would show that a small piece of starch lodged between your teeth would be more food than a quick wash in liquid sugar. It is the sugar and or starches that stay in your mouth for awhile that feed the bacteria.

Yes various acids will also cause possible erosion of your enamel. So technically dentists also should be telling you to steer clear of everything from citrus fruit to vinegar. Though many dentists will debate which causes more enamel erosion, brushing or food acids.

Then lets not get started on flouride in the water.

sumphatpimp 02-08-2005 05:18 PM

soda will take the paint off a car, think what it does to your teeth.
if this dentist treated crack addicts and aids patients I wouldn't want him in the same room as me much less put his fingers in my mouth!

Sheesh whats next, it will disolve meat and bones.

Elli 02-08-2005 05:30 PM

Not to mention cola and esophageal cancer...

:1orglaugh
you would have better luck licking the paint off a car then washing it off with pop.

Platinumpimp 02-08-2005 05:33 PM

Thats why I only drink source water or really sometimes a tonic.

FTVGirls 02-08-2005 05:57 PM

This conversation is quite humorous from my perspective; My non-porn job is Dentistry.

I drink a lot of soda; it had varying effects on different people. Depending on the pH of your saliva, soda can be more or less damaging. Brushing helps, but flossing has nothing to do with Soda.

If you are HIV positive, it does not show in your teeth, but in your gums. A fine red band at the gingival junction that can be seen throughout the maxilliary and mandibular arch. I had the sad experience of diagnosing it on a 16 year old girl once.

Edit: I have a soda right next to me right now lol

Dina_C9 02-08-2005 06:23 PM

if you have to drink it, use a straw so it doesn't hit your teeth

lagwagon 02-08-2005 06:25 PM

i have been drinking capri sun. hehe

digifan 02-08-2005 06:25 PM

I drink only mineral water and green tea I am not a soda fan.

Mike Okitch 02-08-2005 06:55 PM

Dentists who lecture are idiots.

Mine is very happy every time he sees me because he knows damn well that I'm paying his new boat

Doctor Dre 02-08-2005 06:59 PM

Hey You . . . I Know You! 02-08-2005 07:13 PM

I had free soda (I call it "pop") at work as well.

My dentist told me the same thing about soda. She said that if you want to drink a couple of sodas, then just drink them and then brush right away.

She said the worst thing you can do is sit and sip on soda all day long (because your teeth are under attack all day long). Since the soda was free for me, I always had a can going. So, if you drink a lot of soda or if you sip for hours on soda, then you should consider altering your habits.

The other thing she said is that if you must drink soda, at least drink diet (like some have already said - no sugar).

evildick 02-08-2005 07:27 PM

I drink Coke every day. I haven't had a cavity since I was a little kid...can't even remember how many years ago.

I am a fat slob, but my teeth are still fine.

sickkittens 02-08-2005 07:29 PM

I knew a 16 year old that needed special tootpaste and other stuff for her teeth because all she drank was soda.

I hate the dentist. They never have anything good to say while they rip open your mouth and make you bleed.

Do the teeth of your ?future self? a favor and cut way back (or stop). Once you get into your thirties, your teeth will be gone.

Hey You . . . I Know You! 02-08-2005 09:37 PM

What is the worst attack you've done on your teeth?

Sometimes I wake up on the weekend and without bothering to brush, I'll hit my teeth with some ~Hostess mini powdered donuts and then rinse them babies with Dr. Pepper.

Oh, all that sugar is so deliciously sweet!

On those mornings, I can actually hear my teeth screaming for help.

Kapitan Ivanov II 02-08-2005 09:39 PM

Just think of how fucking good your teeth would be if you brushed them after every can of soda you drank.

woj 02-08-2005 11:06 PM

Soda doesn't have any useful stuff in it anyway, when you drink tea or juice at least you are drinking something containing useful minerals/vitamins/etc...

Vitasoy 02-09-2005 12:30 AM

Theres a shit load of sugar in pop. 24 cubes, per can I think?
