This is because the US have twisted Israel's arm.

When USA tells Israel to do something, it does it it, they have no choice because Israel is 100% dependent on USA in every way.

At the end of the day, both sides are responsible for current mess. One side you have the (Israeli) Zionists and the other the (Palestinian) Terrorist groups. In the middle you have the Israeli & Palestinian civilians getting killed as if they were sheep surrounded by foxes.

This meeting was set up by Mubarak after the Rice visit was annonced and planned for over 1 month now.
Mubarak is smelling progress and opportunities and wants to be involved.
The US did not jump in this meeting for many reasons, among them because Israel asked them no to come, also because the US feels like best negotiations can oocur if no major power puts any pressure on either party.

As far as the lenght that this cease fire will last, it all depends on hamas and hizbullah.

Be aware that the Palestinian Authority has arrested and convicted and judged a Palestinian man who was shooting in the air to celebrate Aid el Kedir. The PA even matched the bullet from the dead girl to the Palestinian reveller's gun.
