New Microprocessor Will Have 234 Million Transistors

Wow, check this new chip out!

Setting up a battle for the future of computing, engineers from IBM, Sony and Toshiba unveiled details Monday of a microprocessor they claim has the muscle of a supercomputer and can power everything from video game consoles to business computers.

Cell's designers say their chip, built from the start with the burgeoning world of rich media and broadband networks in mind, can deliver 10 times the performance of today's PC processors.

Cell appears to have an advantage in the number of transistors ? 234 million compared with 125 million for today's latest Pentium 4 chips. Cell is said to run at clock speeds greater than 4 gigahertz.

good stuff :thumbsup

Does anyone have any articles on how these things are built?
Things like this really blow my mind. It's crazy to thing such tiny chips can do just about anything these days.

wow that is sexy I am such a nerd

Matt_WildCash 02-08-2005 01:14 AM

Well glad they didn't mention Moores lore and if it will help keep us on track with Moores lore which died in 2003-2004 when processors didn't jump to 5 ghz

Project-Shadow 02-08-2005 01:14 AM

Thats the mofo that the PS3 will use.

This will be the beginning of things moving along very fast on the development side and will be very interesting.

IceMaster 02-08-2005 01:38 AM

Will it be faster than my 1200 mhz ? I guess no lol.

Strife 02-08-2005 01:44 AM

That's the chip that will be used in the next generation Play Station

RTP

It's huge business in SiliconValley.

My Wifes father made the machines that make the chips.
The chips are small due to the fact that the measurements inside are done by the Micron.

But I wouldnt rule out Alien technology was utilised from UFO crash sites at the beginning:)

BSleazy 02-08-2005 01:49 AM

I'm still waiting for realistic VR or AI. what would it take

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 02-08-2005 01:54 AM

Oh and Even he would say that its a miracle that what they are doing is ALL MAN MADE the fundamental concepts could not have been thought up by a person at the beginning, but now its about building upon the idea's. The concept of chips have changed little really since they started.

I also heard they are thinking about creating nanites to make chips soon.
Ninatic Compounds that will essentially eat trails through the chips at near atomic size measurements.

It blows my mind also looking at a piece of silicone that small and how they are able to layout the electronic pathways for 234 Million transistors to route properly.

Now if they could only figure out how to get the I-95 to flow as smoothly.

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

I still think this technology is coming from somewhere outside this planet. Its too incredible to think we figured this out without some help.

Basic_man 02-08-2005 06:14 AM

This just remind me that I need a damn new computer ! :D

VirtuMike 02-08-2005 08:07 AM
