greece - is it safe for white boys?
according to my brother, it's not very safe due to Albanian mobsters. Soul Rebel, can you comment? if not, you know i'll be emailing you!
|
just dont go around yelling "moolakahs" to anybody
|
btw, i'm serious. i want to go to greece in the fall, and simply figured it was as safe as anywhere.
|
you should just buy an 'around the world' ticket which allows you to fly around the world, up to 15 stops, and a certain milage range, cant stop in same place twice and can only go in one direction... i did it twice last year, UN-belieavable is all i can say.... business-class is like 6-8k$
|
It's safe enough, but not the place anymore where you could solve an issue with your fists. Albanian mobsters exist and it's mostly a threat to those dealing with nighlife (clubs, bars etc). If you move smart you stay out of troubles otherwise...

You will not find any trouble unless you go way off the beaten path. Most of Greece is packed with harmless tourists and the Greeks themselves are fine.
I spent a few months in Piraeus and had a blast. No trouble at all. It is true about the Albanians being dogs...Shortly after I was there I heard about a bunch of them getting into the hostels and making cooking fires in their rooms. A lot of refugees flooded in for a while. BTW you get an answer yet Q? |
That would be an awesome destination...

Hi quiet.. Greece is no problem and no less safe than ... well, safer than New York or London :-) I know a few people who live there.. in hotel management and webmasters... they don't have any problems. I think you will enjoy seeing the place - check out some of the islands! :thumbsup |

just call you favorite airline and ask for 'around the world' specials... i paid 5k for business class on star alliance (im in the middle of the trip actually)... i paid less because i left from bangkok, i think if i was leaving from the USA they say it would have cost me 7k if i originated in USA... i've flown thus far United, I will be flying Varig, Lufthansa, and then then Singapore air... call up your airline and find out the details. |

It is not possible to drive by car ( to dangerous ) through Albania to Italy, the Greeks have to take a ferry to avoid Albanian gagsters. Greece is as safe as any other western country. |
Quiet,
About 3yrs ago I took my daughter and some friends to Rhodes (rhodos) Greece. I wanted to see where my Mom's dad was from / born. Great Island, lots of resorts - nice and hot, fun on the Med. Only like a few miles by boat to Turkey, so lots of tourist things to do. |
after talking to my brother again (who's lived in Europe for years before heading back to Canada), it sounds like i need to be very careful around certain areas of Italy, and Greece. France sounds much safer lol.
i would have thought all was well down there, apparently not. |

Quiet,
As in all places you visit there is good and bad. I spent 10 days in Greece and never had a problem. Of course I noticed that the taxi drivers all seemed lazy :) Seems like alot of them and shops close down alot during mid afternoon for an extended lunch. But everyone was very nice and very gracious. Rhodes gets more Europeans visiting then americans, so I think they enjoyed seeing us and chatting. We went to the old jewish part of the city to check it out, there was a 1200 yr. old temple there, oldest in Greece, and saw the street that was named after our family, Alhadeff, kinda cool.. Food was good, clubs rocked. Prices - just like the usa, no 3rd world pricing there :) |
I'm planning on going to Greece and Egypt next year. Not worried about a thing.
|
when are you leaving Colin? we should hook up for an evening. i planning on leaving for Europe at the end of August...

After seeing your "travelling plans", I have to say that what you must avoid at all cost is the subway in Paris....I mean it

I used the subway to go everywhere when I was in Paris. Never saw or had a problem. I don't know what you consider dangerous about it. Try the subway in New York if you want to see a dangerous subway.
