How do you test your host out?
 

How do you make sure your host is fast, non cogent, does it matter if they are cogent if they are fast?

Are there tools to determine what sites are nice and fast non cogent and which arent. Obviouslt sites will vary from different connections like adsl, cable etc.

in windows go to a dos prompt and type tracert hostname IE:

tracert www.somehost.com

You can then look at times and look for cogent.

To see what your host is using for outbound traffic you can do this from a shell account on your host and type traceroute somehost.com.

Ask your host for a test download file :2 cents:

Correct but ask for it to come from the server you'll be hosted on and traceroute that server.
