Is it true a Celeron chip is a rejected Pentium chip?

some dude at Best Buy told me this "secret"... is there any truth to it?

i'm kinda curious...

the Shemp 01-30-2005 09:42 PM

no, but thats a good sales pitch...

MattO 01-30-2005 09:42 PM

You should know better than to listen to a non-commision goofball at Best Buy.

Here are the most important similarities and differences between the Pentium 4 and the Celeron chips coming out today:
Core - The Celeron chip is based on a Pentium 4 core.

Cache - Celeron chips have less cache memory than Pentium 4 chips do. A Celeron might have 128 kilobytes of L2 cache, while a Pentium 4 can have four times that. The amount of L2 cache memory can have a big effect on performance.

Clock speed - Intel manufactures the Pentium 4 chips to run at a higher clock speed than Celeron chips. The fastest Pentium 4 might be 60 percent faster than the fastest Celeron.

Bus speed - There are differences in the maximum bus speeds that the processors allow. Pentium 4s tend to be about 30 percent faster than Celerons.
When you sort all this out and compare the two chips side by side, it turns out that a Celeron and a Pentium 4 chip running at the same speed are different beasts. The smaller L2 cache size and slower bus speeds can mean serious performance differences depending on what you want to do with your computer. If all you do is check e-mail and browse the Web, the Celeron is fine, and the price difference can save you a lot of money. If you want the fastest machine you can buy, then you need to go with the Pentium 4 to get the highest clock speeds and the fastest system bus.

no it was made specificly to be lower powered

Easton 01-30-2005 09:43 PM

i didn't think so either Rob, but we ended up with a P4 pimpin wide-brite-screen laptop anyhow... grrrrrrrr... we sold ourselves up LOL

Easton 01-30-2005 09:44 PM

thanks Matt, that was very insightful :)

Spunky 01-30-2005 09:44 PM

Celeron computers are o.k but always stick with pentium for performance..spend the extra

absolutely, that's what we did... it just came up in the conversation and my bullshit meter went off, but i couldn't prove it LOL

BJ 01-30-2005 09:47 PM

better get the warranty or else you're screwed!!! :1orglaugh

Easton 01-30-2005 09:49 PM

like i'd buy an extended warranty from someone who reminds me six times in 20 minutes that he isn't on commission... LMAO

jeffrey 01-30-2005 09:53 PM

lol
they might not be on commission but they get a bonus for selling x number of warranties.

The OLD celerons were rejected pentium chips. the new ones are just made to lower standards. and not as fast.

Easton 01-30-2005 09:57 PM

cool, glad we got that all cleared up... thanks guys

MattO - another question if you don't mind

I've been googling this question....

the P4 chip doesn't overheat? at 80 degrees C it regulates the entire system, slowing it down to lower the temp of the fan. so the P4 does not have a max temp? what is acceptable levels? is over 50 C bad? the P3 and P2 chips have detailed specs.

I'm new.

mrthumbs 01-30-2005 10:06 PM

yeah heard that too smewhere ages ago

BV 01-30-2005 10:13 PM

not sure if it holds true now but a few years ago yes

Hustlin Entertainment 01-30-2005 10:18 PM

all lies all of it

kowntafit 01-30-2005 10:22 PM

I think it was specifically designed that way. But you could be right.

I get about 6 months out of a computer before I completely destroy it. No I'm not talking about viruses.....I just work the hell out of them.

I killed a Celeron based computer in a month. The thing just kept crashing and couldn't handle my photoshop and premiere work.

stev0 01-30-2005 11:16 PM

No, that's bullshit... the L2 cache is the big difference between Celeron and P3/4.

Der Schleicher 01-30-2005 11:21 PM

Celeron chips are good for home use. but pentium are much better for graphics softwares

lanclandesigns 01-30-2005 11:27 PM

That IS IN FACT 110% true. My cousin worked for intel for 4 years and he was the dude who wore the big "space suit" and helped put chips together. Celrons are rejected pentium 4 chips that have a few of the whatever the fuck u call it burnt out.

iwantchixx 01-30-2005 11:34 PM

bullshit. Total urban myth.

celerons were purposely made that way.

Sosa 01-31-2005 12:31 AM

celerons are fucking pos cpus. They run slower then fuck and can't do much with them in my opinion. Can't run more then 1 program at a time.

Dumbass

See many of you are studying for your A+ exam.

Testing of a chip determines what speed it will be sold at. Never trust a Best Buy Sales Rep. Go over and ask one of the Geek Squad guys. Geek Squad supports Best BUy for awhile now.

Mike Okitch 01-31-2005 12:58 AM

That's one retarded Best Buy salesman

jimmyf 01-31-2005 10:12 AM

If they were rejects I'm sure Intel would not be selling them.

Phoenix 01-31-2005 10:33 AM

you were right to buy a P4..that guy is an ass though if the only way he can upsell you is to lie.

shoulda bought a dell

Dusen 01-31-2005 10:34 AM

I believe that used to be the rumor about the old Pentinum II slot 1's. It is most certainly not true now.
