Nikon D70

Whats your opinion on this camera, the D1X is out of my price range but I'm ready for an upgrade. How is the consistency of the color in photos, white balance etc. Any pro/cons of folks using this camera would be greatly appreciated.

It's a great camera.

Instant start up, great resolution and sharpness much better than the Canon EOS 300d or EOS 10D, Great color saturation and you can use most of the Nikor lenses.

I got mine a few months ago and I am extremely happy with it. Before I had a Canon 10D, which I sold to buy the D70.

Thanks Praguer...that's exactly the kind of info I'm looking for. Anybody else have input

great camera.. I highly recommend it.. very cost-effective -g

I love it except when you need a real wide angle even the 17mm is not enough for me.

..oh yea the SB28 that works on all of my other Nikons does not do TTL on the D70.

I tested the D70 for a full week and found it to be an astounding camera for the money. Even the shots I took without a tripod took my breath away when I brought them up on my computer--and I shot in jpeg not raw!

There was almost no downside to this camera for me!

suesheboy 01-30-2005 08:39 AM

I want to also add as usual the book for it sucks.

I tested both the D70 and the Canon 300. Both great cameras, although I ended up buying the Canon. The main plus to the Canon was the lower ASA - Canon goes as low as 100, while Nikon goes to 200. For me, this was important but may not be for you. My photography is used mainly for large scale advertising, like billboards, so anything that decreases grain is important to me. Plus, I do a lot of outdoor nature & landscape photography. The 100 ASA allows me to go for a high aperature and use long shutter speeds for some awesome blurred motion shots.

I like the uncorrected color of the Canon better, but they are both good.

One real advantage to the Nikon is the instant on. The 4 second lag to start the Canon up can be quite annoying. I've missed a couple of great shots because of this.

Another plus to the Nikon is the better multi shot capability. The Canon seems to have a limit of about 4 shots one after another, while the Nikon can keep storing shots in quick succession.

They are both great cameras. The deciding factor for me was the ASA, my perceived better color from the Canon, and the fact that I am a long time Canon user, with a number of lenses already purchased. But, really, with either camera, you are pretty much guaranteed to be very happy.

I would suggest you do a search on google for d70 galleries or portfolios. You should be able to find 1,000's of pics that show you the camera's treatment of color.

Heres the deal

The D70 is good i shot with ours and compared it to our Nikon Dx1 The color was OK the sharpness excellent but under strobe i had to turn down all my lights to minimum at F22 and even then the image was too dark. This is because of the 200 ASA minimum setting on the D70 which is far too high for studio work IMHO.

Its great value and outdoor shots are fantastic I shot in Argentina Thailand, Germany, Uk, Spain etc etc and never had an exposure problem outdoors.

If you do buy the D70 purchase the $20 remote its a handy gadget that is not advertised much but allows you to be away from the camera and to trip the shutter from about 20 feet away, ideal for POV shoots ?

Some of the shots in the models gallery on http://www.fantasyforge.com where done with the D70

There are some great feebback in this thread.

I am also thinking about the Nikon D70

Would the Nikon Coolpix 8800 be a good camera too?

latinasojourn 01-30-2005 12:23 PM

well it's a good camera if you already have nikon glass.

but if you are on a budget, and were to own just ONE slr, and one lens, and you were looking for a camera just for adult web content i would buy the canon digital rebel.

best color for the best price (for web work)

I've also done some shooting with the 8800. The 8 megapixel resolution is nice. But, you are stuck with the one fixed lens and not nearly the creative control of the Canon 300D or Nikon D70. My 2 cents would be to go the DSLR route. Even if you don't think you need the options now...when you experience the joy of good quality digital photography, you will be wishing you had the DSLR options available.

I should note, my advice comes from shooting a lot of material for mainstream advertising campaigns. So, I tend to push my cameras a lot more then someone who is using a consistent studio set-up for figure photography. I used a film based 35mm for 28 years, up until last year, when I felt the quality and control available from digital had finally caught up with film.

Thanks for all the great info folks....I think I'm sold!

just bought a D70 for a backup camera Love it :thumbsup :thumbsup

DWB 01-31-2005 02:21 AM

I have a D70 and had to send it back to Canon to fix a back focus problem that a few of them had from day 1. They sent it back and it was working great... I'm shipping it back again tomorrow for another focusing problem.

It's something to do with the software in the camera and one or two batches of them that were sold NOT all of them. I was just lucky enough to get a bad one. I'm pressuring them to replace it totally now or move on to another camera.

I will say that when it's on point... it kicks major ass and the battery life is incredible.

woj 01-31-2005 02:21 AM

It's probably the best consumer grade SLR camera....

flashfire 01-31-2005 02:22 AM

thats a great camera in its class, good price

SGS 01-31-2005 02:24 AM

The D70 is excellent value for money.

reynold 01-31-2005 03:31 AM

I think the camera is okay.

fischi 01-31-2005 04:17 AM

Been using it for about a month. Have not had the chance to test it with my speedo lighting yet, but so far I am happy with it.
