I would suggest an African Grey Parrot also. I bought a hand fed African Grey parrot at 8 weeks old a few years ago for $2000. Smartest bird I've ever seen and has an almost human voice. You can buy an older one for cheaper but it is best to get them as a baby. The only downfall is that it is a one person bird and is usually not to friendly to anyone else. The person that raises it is it's friend for life. All 80 years of it. :)

XOXOXO

You'd likely be looking at $2k+ for a decent, hand fed bird (meaning, as a baby, it was fed by hand to acclimate it to humans) from a reputable breeder ? but that's just the start: vet visits (they need their wings and toenails trimmed, and if you fuck up, you'll be sorry - and fucked up, as these bad boys can and will easily snap off a finger, hence the importance of hand fed babies) and other expenses are ongoing.

These things can be real fuckers, tossing shit all over the place out of their (large and expensive) cages, and can break your lease if you're a renter cuz they can be LOUD.

We saw an African Grey @ the park tonight. He was sitting on a railing near his owner and whistled at my wife, then said something to my dog which freaked my dog out ? and being a bird dog, not a smart thing for a bird to do.

They (while not as pretty) make better pets, and better "talkers"

An old friend was a bird fan / collector. He loved them. I don't trust 'em

:2 cents:

Mr. Mike 01-29-2005 09:02 PM

2k for a bird?? Dang, does it lay golden eggs?

pornguy 01-29-2005 09:02 PM

We have a Grey, and she is sitting on the shower curtain rod in the office bathroom, and talking her head off. In fact. Since she wants to be sitting here with us, she is yelling pretty damn loud.

They are a fulltime pet. They eat with you, and want to be with you all the time. They are very social, and need to be with you.

Alex 01-29-2005 09:03 PM

African Greys are great, but it isnts true that its a oneperson bird.

My cuz has one and i visit it often and its okay with me.

But he had it since it 6 weeks and trained it well.

suesheboy 01-29-2005 09:11 PM

I have had birds for years they even have their own room in my house.

My baby is a grey he is about 14 years old now and live 60 - 80 years. I got him as an egg.

Expect to pay from $1,500 to $10,000 depending on the breed, the parents, and if it is hand fed or not.

They want lots of attention. LOTS. They make a mess. LOTS. They make noise. LOTS.

If you want one, buy it when you are young, get a HUGE cage, and don't be a renter.

NaughtyRob 01-29-2005 09:13 PM

They are pretty expensive. Nice. Birds annoy me though.

The age you mention is how old they usually become in the free nature.

When kept caged by people around 30-50 years. We had one all my life, and it died 5 years ago when it was 27, fell from his stick and broke his neck :(

Horrible scream my mom told me (I was away) she said she would never forget that scream :(

KRL 01-30-2005 06:29 AM

You have to be real careful what you say around those birds that talk. They are smart as heck. If you date lots of girls BD I wouldn't recommend it.

do you live in Slovenia?

I've been living in and out of Italy for 4 years now and I never saw an Energie shirt but as anyone who has lived in Montreal can attest, the Italian comunity is strong so you can probably find that stuff in certain shops. Unless he bought it online :p

PersianKitty 01-30-2005 06:39 AM

That is a blue and gold macaw. They can easily live to be 50 years old. Are one of the noisier (louder) parrots. I've seen them for anywhere from $1000 upwards. Might check a parrot rescue for one that someone wants to give up.

I have a Timneh African Grey.. much smaller.. and relatively quiet but extremely smart. Her name is Kara... she calls my boys by name using my voice. She calls the cats "here kitty kitty", sings several songs, knows the first half of the alphabet song, the microwave beep, tons of whistles (among them the Ed, Ed and Eddie theme), and tons more.
