Hey Persian Kitty.....

Hopefully you are browsing the boards today......

I am discussing Koi ponds or ponds in general with a friend of mine. I told him that you have one of the best ponds I have ever seen.

Can you post some pics for all the kiddies?

Fletch XXX 01-28-2005 01:56 PM

Nice bookmarked. I always wanted to set up a pond. I currently have a 110 gallon saltwater set up. :thumbsup

oddly enough, was just talking about ponds on icq. any of you have experience with grass carp?

CoreAdult-Dee 01-28-2005 02:41 PM

I built a pond in the back garden before ponds were ever popular. At that time they did not have "pond liners" so I improvised and used the roofing stuff they put on before the tar on flat roofs. It worked well. I got out a hose and layed out the shape of my pond and started digging. The earth I removed I used to build a waterfall etc. I had flagstone around the edges and a nice park bench. I also had a dwarf Japenese Maple that was half green, half red (grafted) hanging over the waterfall.

I had water lilies and severa other plant species. I kept Japense Koi in the pond all year long and as soon as you walked up to the pond the Koi would come up to the top in anticipatation of food. If you wiggled your fingers in the pond a few of them would come up to be pet. The Koi would breed in the pond so it was always fun seeing what the offspring would look like.

We moved and I must admit that I really miss the pond.

MikeXAMO 01-28-2005 02:45 PM

does PK live in BC? she must live in a very wet area to get all that moss to grow..

Tera 01-28-2005 02:50 PM

Wow that is amazing! How beautiful...

I saw a snipet on the news this morning, something about how koi fish are looking more and more human in the face. They showed some pics and it was insane! They were huge and they had complete human like faces. I will have to dig around and see if I can locate the pics and videos they were showing.

It was from somewhere in Japan I believe...

She lives in WA. A few hours south of BC.

PersianKitty 01-28-2005 03:36 PM

Thanks all... glad you found the pics... those are about 2 years old. It's looking a bit sparse right now because it's winter. In the spring it's wonderful because there's all sorts of things in bloom and everything blooms white.. along with water lillies and canna in the pond itself.

Aaron, if you friend wants specs. My pond was built in the summer of 2000. It's between 7500 and 8000 gallons total. From top of falls to back side of the skimmer box it's about 120 feet long and at the widest point about 24 feet. Deepest depth is about 40 inches (doesn't get too cold to completely freeze solid here in WA). The pond is an Aquascapes pond, using their concept and falls and skimmer box for filtration. There are 18 koi in the lower pond which is approximately 3800 gallons.

their level of craftsmanship is way above the european/american/whatever level.

Did you know that japanese cooks hold a funeral for their knives when they are not usable anymore?

hehe.. it's something we found helping someone clean out their junk in their yard. What's left of a very old small sailboat. It's falling apart, but it adds to the character.

Adultlexicon 01-28-2005 05:00 PM

seven 01-28-2005 05:03 PM
