more = ip/domains? more = $$$?

why do webhost like to charge clients more money when they are requesting for more domains to be added or additional ips?

do they really cost the HOST that much money?

Keev 08-11-2001 01:50 AM

I think the fees come in to make it look like it takes alot of labor to do it but really doesnt take any time at all being its all automated...

wito 08-11-2001 02:07 AM

Because they want to make more money. Simple.

No,

Because each IP costs the web host money.

If you want to avoid being charged extra, it is possible host multiple domains on one IP.

Also,

I'd like to add that IPs usually don't cost the host THAT much money.

Some hosts like www.dynamichosting.com don't pass the charges onto the consumer.

An IP block of 500 IP cost something like 5000 $ a year ... IPs are really expensive http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

For 255 class C IPs you pay about $5k a year.

I have about a dozen names sitting idle - is it worth getting them pointed to one of my running sites just to get the name propagated?

ips are expensive enough and most hosting companies only have so many of them so it cost them they can't just give them away

hell i wouldn't http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/wink.gif

Sigh..

Because it's impossible for a host to get more IP's allocated to them if all their IP's are tied up in virtual hosts.

ARIN no longer accepts http hosts on the same machine to be a valid use of IP's. This is actually a good decision though, as every browser and it's mom supports HTTP 1.1.

And yes, there *IS* administration overhead to adding more domains for you. This includes more DNS lookups (bandwidth), e-mail setup, apache setup, etc. etc. It's not "free" to the host as people like to think. Yes, a rarely visited domain doesn't cost the host much money, but there is something there. Prolly worth a buck or two a month to support and keep on the servers.

when the new protocol will be up and running you can have as many as you want in almost no price.

Prohosters gives you unlimited domains and 100 IPs for no extra cost. If you want more IPs, it's a one time fee of $1.

prohosters 11-15-2001 01:18 AM

What really irks me is all this misinformation about ips to the hosts benefit.

Here are a few common misconceptions:

1. it costs the host money for extra ips (500-1000)
Arin charges per their website $5000/yr for up to a /16 .... well a /18 is 16K+ ips. so you do the math.

2. Arin won't accept web hosting companies with more than 1 ip per server.
This is just not true. Pro Hosters went for
our ips and got them in 5 days flat. /18 no problem. Perhaps some people don't know how to justiify but that's not the same thing as
ARIN doesn't allow them.

Lastly let me say the reason providers charge
for ips is $$. Plain and simple. If you charge $1/mo per ip at 16k ips you are making 16k/mo in ips alone more than 20x what it costs to have the ips.
Imagine the companies charging $5.00

Pro Hosters is always going to tell it to your straight.

I must say, prohosters gets a thumbs up from me. I have heard all the stories about how IPs are soooo expensive. They promised up to 100 for free, and I have moved some domains there. I thought they might give me a problem, as right now I am only on their $28.00 plan, and not going over that much (I will be soon).

However, I have over 50 domains with them now, and they respond sometimes in minutes for adding domains - and they give me the IP too (not that I couldn't find it out, but it is nice). Not once have they been anything but 100% professional.

I have gotten very, very quick service from them - even on the weekends and in the middle of the night.

They were switching servers and expected a 10-20 minute downtime. They emailed eveyone (at least they emailed me) to explain when and what they were doing.

No more $5.00 an IP (per month) and unclear terms. They explain it all right up front. I can use SSI on .html, get great support, and get 100 IPs included a month - where else can you find that? At a great price. They have an interface that is almost the best I have seen (I like dreamhosts a little better, but I would owe dreamhost like $1M in bandwidth & IP costs).

This doesn't mean that hosts that do charge extra are cheats or scammers, as they may just not have enough demand for them - or as someone suggested - not know how to justify the need for them. I still have hosting at several companies that charge extra, but I won't be adding any more domains with them in the future. I wish all companies were as good at customer service as prohosters.

Yep, the browsers do, the search engines don't. One good (the only?) reason for people wanting lots of IP's.
