Software Upgrades: [Do We Really Need Them?]
For 3 years, I ran Mac OS 9 software, (parallel to Windows 98) before upgrading to 10.
Before the upgrade, I ran Dreamweaver, Photoshop and all my media applications with no problem. Now, the automated software seems like it wants me to upgrade every 3 weeks. an it's not just system software, EVERYONE is doing it. Server software, Firmware, Norton, Vbulletin, Photoshop, Flash, AIM, ICQ and 1000's more. But the buck doesn't stop there. To run the lastest software, you'll need a new G5 with 1.5 gb ram, video/audio/expantion cards, a Red-Book DVD authoring burner, Toast Titanium, 20 inch monitors- and of course, if you're a designer- when they upgrade internet applications, browsers, or php- you might have to redesign your sites or even upgrade severs- and it just keeps going ON... The "Upgrade Game"- It's how software companies make their money. It's bullshit. By the time I get all the tools and software I need for a project, a new version comes out- and if they can't sell you on new features, they'll sell you on bug fixes. (Which should be free regardless of your support plan because they shouldn't even be selling buggy software in the first place.) I stopped playing that game four years ago. I don't post on support forums very often- just so I can stay out of the loop. Because constant uprgading hinders precious projectivity time, I found it better to be 'uninformed'. |

Post of the year. |
i do a major upgrade every 6 months, unless it's security related, and when i do upgrade it's usually not the latest version, this is especially true on open source software... for example, i am running a few versions behind on apache (with bug fixes applied) and usually follow whatever version slashdot or another large scale site is running... same goes for qmail etc... it's not worth upgrading every single time a new version is out unless it's security related, or definatly needed (e.g. Adobe CS was one of those)...

Yes, I find that quite amusing too. But OS X's Software Update makes life a lot easier.
|
I only upgrade stuff if I need a new feature in a new version (ie. MySQL)...besides that, I never upgraded my Pico and it's working fine =)

I'll buy software. (eg. Photoshop, windows xp.) but I will never pay for an upgrade- it's against my religion.
I believe, when you buy a software, it should be for life. When CS came out and I heard I had to pay for it, I was pissed because I just bought Photoshop 7, so I went to Kazaa and downloaded it. |
you can't play games with security
