Murder on Capitol Hill
If a murder was committed on Capitol Hill (the capitol itself), which police force would investigate it?
Would it be the Capitol Police (which does mostly security on the Capitol Ground) or would it be the MPDC (Metropolitan Police Department) or someone else, like the FBI ? Anyone know ? |
It depends on who was murdered, but most likely if it was Joe Schmo, the Capitol Police and the Secret Service would do a joint investigation.
|
I assume you're refering to the Capitol in DC?
|
Both I guess. It should quicken the investigation.
|
To many variables. It could be a number of agencies investigating it, but the Capitol Police would have jurisdiction.

Thanks guys, I think I got my question answered.
Yes, I´m refering to the Capitol in Washington DC. Have spends 2 hours trying to find something about this and just found the following about the 1998 shooting on Capitol Hill: "The investigation was being led by the D.C. Metropolitan Police homicide branch in conjunction with the FBI and Secret Service. Also assisting were Capitol Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Justice Department. " That pretty much confirms the answers you gave me. Thank you for the help :-) |

Who are you plotting to kill? :1orglaugh |

Problem is once the investigation establishes a motive, the investigating agency could change. But ultimately, being federal property, it would be the Capitol PD and the SS. If it was domestic or foriegn terrorism the FBI would get in it. If it was some homeless cat with a gun, DCPD would get in it... You know what I mean though. Glad we could help! |
Not planning to kill anyone :-)
Just writting a novel (when I have the time) and a one point the "Architect of the Capitol" http://www.aoc.gov/ is killed and I needed to know who would be in charge of the investigation. BTW: Anyone know where he´s office is located. Is in the capitol building or in some of the surrounding buildings on the capitol grounds ? |

Depends On Who Was Murdered.
|
I was going to say I'd bet there just about everyon would
be investigating. This confirms what I was going to say, I guess: "The investigation was being led by the D.C. Metropolitan Police homicide branch in conjunction with the FBI and Secret Service. Also assisting were Capitol Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Justice Department. " So officially it was the Secret Service, Justice, MPDC, FBI and ATF. Surely the NSA and CIA would also be taking an interest in how a murder ocurred at the capitol and why. Also of course other agencies known by initials were doing their best to investigate, agencies like CBS, NBC, and CNN. :) |
There are a variety of Police agencies located in the federal enclave which is Washington, District of Columbia. Local (DC metropolitan police) work in conjunction with many different federal and local branches of law enforcement. Most of the technically jurisdiction for DC is governed by the US Park Police. Most of the federal buildings have specific jurisdictions that go with them. Supreme Court police, White House police (uniformed division of the secret service) who also guard the embassies and consulates, pentagon police (defense protective agency), Library of Congress Police, Federal protective service (guard all GSA buildings), AMTRACK police (union station), Metro Transit police (WAMTA properties), Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police (DC airports)?..and so on.

The Honorable Alan M. Hantman, FAIA Architect of the Capitol U.S. Capitol Washington, D.C. 20515 If his office was in one of the surrounding buildings, it would include the name of the building. For example: Senator Edward Kennedy 317 RUSSELL SENATE OFFICE BUILDING WASHINGTON DC 20510 |
They should cooperate with each other.
