TECHIE QUESTION

Hey guys

I have an old Packard Bell Legend Supreme 1710 200Mhz machine with 32MB of EDO RAM ...

I have a 64 MB of EDO RAM in a 166 NEC that I don't use an more ...

I tried to grab 2 of the 16MB strips from the NEC and drop them in the other machine to bring the RAM up to 64 in the faster (LOL) machine, but when I turned it on, the screen was blank ... as soon as I took the extra strips out, and turned it back on, it worked fine again ???

Anybody know what I am doing wrong ???
I use the 200MMX machine for a second machine when my wife and I are both working on sites, and would really like to have 64 MB in it http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/frown.gif

Well, I know PB was proprietary gear before they shut the doors... not sure, but that seems to be at the root of alot of PB troubles. (Even monitors)

Turn the monitor on.

Look at your ram, there is a serial number on it. Grab that thing, and look up hardware catalogs to find a white paper on it or a technical doc, that will tell you all the things you need to know. See if it's compatible with the hardware your trying to run it on.

1 word. Er site.

crucial.com

Makes buying RAM for crappy sytems like that a *lot* easier, and their RAM (not to mention customer service) is absolutely top notch. I used to use the pricewatch vendor cheapo RAM, but I've learned my lesson after hundreds of GB's (yes, Gigabytes) bought through crucial w/o a single serious problem (most serious was a 2 day shipping delay when they ran out of RAM for a 50+ 256MB DIMM order a while back)

nkay, it's been a while but i think your sticks have to put into the buses in pairs. you can't have a 16meg stick next to a 4meg stick. there's also a thingy about the order of the sticks, but i ferget. it's something about how you have to put the biggest sticks first and the lesser ones last or vice versa.

love

HUNGRYMAN, with the Packard Bell most likely you can not use more than 32meg, try just one
simms that you want to use and see if you get any lights, just lights then try the other one.

Your max is 32meg

I thought that mix matching ram in a lot cases actually slowed the box considerably, alot of time there are certain configurations that the memory must abide by example 2x64mg and 2x128 you cannot have 1x64, 2x32 and 2x128.

Yep, it will run just as fast as the slowest
simms. So if you put one slow NON EDO simms in with fast EDO ones then it will run as fast as the slowest one.
