So I'm out for a walk just now and I decide to walk to my nearest 7-11 for a candy bar. I figured the walk would cancel out the calories and I'd be ok.

So I get there and this 18 year old looking bum with taped shoes and dirty hands opens the door for me. I didn't ask him and I really didn't want to smell him as I walked in. Whatever ok, so I get my 100 grand bar and walk out. He notices I'm moving for the door and so he opens the door again for me to leave except this time he's got what looked about like 13 cents in his rotten little paw, shaking it, and was begging for money.

What the fuck?? He's COMPLETELY CAPABLE of physical labor yet he still begs. I don't understand.

When did bums become self-employed? He just woke up this afternoon and said, I'm gonna make myself a job. "Doorman at the 7-11" I think is his official title.

I've worked construction a few times in my life. If you show up on a job site and are willing to clean up after everyone, the GC will give you a job. Especially to an 18 year old willing to work.

Self-employed bums, what will they think of next?

yeah im doin great, most people come out with like 75 cents change, that adds up to a good $8 an hour and all i gotta do is open a door for people :winkwink:

I'm sure they have them everywhere but here in portland you can't seem to get off or on the freeway with out the bums standing with thier signs asking for money. A couple of my friends talked another of our friends into trying it out to see how much he made. We dressed him up nasty, he didn't shave for a a week before doing this and didn't shower for a couple of days. We made him and sign and put him on an offramp. The guy made like $65 just standing there for about 6 hours. So almost $11 an hour. . . hell that's not bad.

No shit! Cat and I were driving around one night and had just picked up some food at Panda Express in Universal City right where Lankershim and Ventura meets. There is a parking lot right near there and we decided to pull over and eat. We were facing that intersection and just watching the cars and talking. And we could see this bum in that intersection beggin' for cash. We watched him and he was making out pretty good he'd get something from almost every group of cars that came thru the light.

Sure enough he eventually walked away. He came down the sidewalk towards us, crossed into the parking lot where we were and he got in a newer model BMW and drove off. NO SHIT! True story.

Can you possibly imagine how humiliating it must be for a grown man to resort to holding the door open for twits half his age just to get a few pennies?

Instead of insulting the poor guy maybe say "hello", ask him how's he doing? Hey, why not go all out and buy him a coffee? For the $1 or so it would cost you it would mean a lot to a guy in his position.

Your post and attitude is a great deal of why people are in his position - we look at anyone "less" than us as scum of the earth and do everything we can to avoid them. If he had a few people in his life that gave a shit he probably wouldn't be holding the door groveling for you.

p.s. I hope next time you go in there, he trips you on the way out. That would be a great "owned" pic, no?
