How much bandwidth does a average forum use?
 

I was thinking of starting a forum for surfers and I just wanted to know if it is worth it?
and how much b/w a forum useing Ultimate Bulletin Board script uses

Are there any people here that run forums
That could let me know a few tips?

Don't run UBB>. it's a RAM/CPU hog.. (worse than win95 http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif )

Try dcforum from dcscripts.com or vbulletin(great it's both php or cgi)

20k hits a day will cost ya about 1Mbit

... I agree with m0rph3us, and if you are going to use ubb make sure to set it up on a good server ... as of bandwith, 20k users should use up 1Mbit.

keep in mind that on a new board you will get almost spam only ... so there will be a lot of backgroundwork involved, it´s not just like installing a script and off you go ... and I also think you are liable for anything posted there, so you gotta watch and moderate it every day ... it´s a hell of a job ... posting galleries is much easier ...

My wife and I have started a forum to compliment our mainstream business.

We use EZBOARDS and like it very much ... It allows you to pay a small monthly premium to get extended features, and no popups or banner ads .... VERY MUCH WORTH IT !!! http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif

Nice thing about EZBOARDS, is that you are not eating the bandwidth, and it is 100% customizable to your site ... they do weekly backups of all your posts, settings, etc ...

Yes ... EZBOARDS is much cheaper than UBB.
We have several friends in the Indian community who have purchased UBB, and now are having to "close down" their boards periodically just to try to keep their bandwidth bills down.

another nice thing about EZBoards is that because THEY host it ... you do not need any real knowledge of MySQL or PHP to set it up.

One friend of ours who has UBB and is having bandwidth nightmares, took a look at our board the other day, and was VERY IMPRESSED with how close it's features were to UBB.
Matter of fact, he is signing up for EZBoards tomorrow =)
