God DAMN they must pull for surfers, cause I see these FUCKING ads that say "San Francisco Wembasters" or whatnot and I'm scrolling down the page... and my first reaction is "WTF??? Hmm, interesting..." and then I realize I just got OWNED by a GEO IP ad.

So what's the scoop on these things anyway??

what's the scoop? Uhm.... they're ads based on a person's geographical location that's determined by your ip address.

Yeh, I've been meaning to look @ how to print/copy the location on the images.

GEO Targetting is great - and there's a few people on the board that can code it up great in PHP

I'd love to know how to do this properly.. I've looked at it in the past, are they looking it up and caching based upon arin results? Or have they got some database already put together for this? I cant imagine looking this up live is very efficient..

yea dating programs would do well with this, dont they already? I'll keep his info handy in case I actually need this service (so far I dont think it would do much for me)

It's a great tool, but far from perfect - the geo ad I keep seeing here on GFY always says "Montreal webmasters". I'm from Toronto. And the one in the sig of the post above me says "St.Catharines"... I'm thinking the St.Catharines webmaster community is pretty small.

There's tons of variables... In a lot of cases the result will be a suburb because that is where your ISP's datacenter is.

I'm not THE LEADER, but my product works as a graphic and is JPEG that can be auto generated from a desktop application without knowing any programming ... I can take any JPEG and integrate geo ip marketing

In my oppinion the most detailed and most accurate one out there is Maxmind's system. I also think its one of the first ones around.

I am assuming sometimes it will be inaccurate depending on your ISP. For me, it tells me the correct city I am in but I know for others it could be off.

and increases click thrus and sales NO MATTER WHAT!

If it works 70% of the time and increases clicks and sales 300% is it worth using?

How'bout 200% increase in clicks and sales? 100%? 50%?

wtf... i live in montreal. the adultlocals ad says "gaithersburg" and fuzebox's sig says "arlington". i'm nowhere near MD or VA.

on the otherhand, j$tyle$'s graphics are correctly showing montreal.

those images put me in a different part of the world, hmmm maybe i should move

That one shows a small city 60km away, even though I live in a major city. The only one I've seen here that shows the correct city is the AFF ad.

i've done awesome with geo targetting, i love it :)

I tried the SexSearch Geo Ads and so far they are convertign way better for me then other dating sites I have promoted

Has sponsors started using them for everyone?
