It's a Swiss Dog, from Bern. In German you call it "Berner Sennenhund"

No no, it's a BERNESE Mountain dog. I knew it was familiar! They are quite popular over here. Very smart and loving.

My friend tried to get a mountain dog, it was over $1000 dollars. He and his wife failed the adoption process and were rejected . The breeders for those dogs are strict.

Nice Dog.

Tala 01-19-2005 06:57 PM

He's not a St. Bernard. Too much fur and too much black.

He's a Bernese Mountain Dog. And a cute one, too.

yes, actually "Bernese Cattle Dog" comes closer than "Bernese Mountain Dog" (to the original name "Berner Sennenhund")

SleazeQueen 01-19-2005 07:04 PM

Oh my god! I love the Bernese Mountain Dog! Lots of people around here have them. I wish I could have one, but my husband would have had a seizure if I brought one home. They are too big for his first dog. Instead we got a Papillon. So cute!

Growing up with both a cat and dog gives you good balance.

It has the duality of being seen as a god and totally ignored all at the same time.

Nice looking dog. I found some information about the breed you may want to be aware of:

The average lifespan of the Bernese has decreased in recent years from 10-12 yrs to 6-8 yrs. The BMD Club of America did a health survey in 2000 with 1,322 dogs. The average age of death was 7.2 yrs. Cancer is unfortunately a very large part of the Berner world and many Berners die young. One source states "I know of several that died of cancer at 3-4 yrs old and one that died two days before his 2nd birthday. The BMD Club of America is aggressively researching this cancer issue! We must see if we can end this sad situation."
