Maxtor drives suck ass

Just had a four month old maxtor 160gb 7200rpm 8mb cache drive die. Thanks maxtor!

yep they do suck ass. we replace a ton of them at work

NinjaSteve 01-19-2005 03:20 PM

Yeah maxtors suck ass in my opinion. I prefer the Seagate drives with the 5 year warranty. Also Western Digital has done well for me too, they have ones with a 3 year warranty.

Maxtor and IBM Desktar drives have not done good for me at all.

flashfire 01-19-2005 03:21 PM

I use Maxtor and have never had a problem

QuaWee 01-19-2005 03:31 PM

Hitachi are even worse. Died within a week of buying it

VirtuMike 01-19-2005 03:36 PM

Haha the Hitachi DeathStar. Maxtor has made its way off our Approved Vendor list.

WD is the way to go.

My Maxtor OneTouch died once. I revived it with diskrecovery pro and kept most of the data luckily.

IBM or Seagate are rock solid drives, but to be fair ... I hope you are not using such a large drive as the primary master (MHO).

We use the IBMs in our servers and Seagates in our video boxes ... no issues after a few years of heavy usage.

(Most if not all drive producers are actually using IBM's components to build their drives.)

Some Maxtor drives are okay, but for the most part they belong on the shelf at Cosco.

I enjoy maxtor drives, have never had a problem with them.

d00t 01-19-2005 05:44 PM

johnny1 01-19-2005 06:08 PM

I have never had a problem with mine. As any storage device all I can say! Back that ass up.

Kard63 01-19-2005 06:15 PM

1. IBM
2. WD

3,4,5 = seagate, hitachi, maxtor - CRAP

ULVideo 01-19-2005 10:24 PM

I had a Maxtor drive take a shit on me in August. It's replacement only lasted LESS THAN A MONTH. Maxtor factory replaced it, but it's still sitting in my desk drawer because I'm affraid to use it.

MikeXAMO 01-19-2005 10:25 PM

Maxtor's just dont last like they used to. Seagate!!!!

MikeXAMO 01-19-2005 10:26 PM

Spunky 01-19-2005 10:29 PM

Haven't had a problem in over 7 years...... touch wood.

rowan 01-19-2005 10:39 PM

I read a couple of years ago that IBM drives are now rebadged drives from other manufacturers such as Samsung. From memory there were 3 manufacturers making the same models, so you never really knew where it came from.

Is this still the case?

I've had an IBM deskstar drive go out - I researched it and the best guess is that the head erased/wrote whilst it was seeking over the disk. Big no-no! Kind of like splashing white-out across a typed sheet of paper... most of the data is still there, but as a whole the document is ruined. I was able to low level format the drive and it's working fine now, but I can't trust that drive (or rather its firmware) any more. Who knows when it will next energise the erase heads at the wrong moment.

ProjectNaked 01-19-2005 10:39 PM

WD --- :thumbsup

I had same thing happen last year, it really hurt as I had transferred most of my work files to this 'new' drive and did not complete backups. Thanks Maxtor :321GFY

chupachups 01-19-2005 10:45 PM

This is weird....... I LOVE my IBM/Seagate drives - I have never ever had any problems with them. What I hate though is SAMSUNGs and Maxtors!

LiveDose 01-19-2005 11:13 PM

I had a western digital drive eat 80 gigs of data after about 3 months of use. Tried 3 data recovery programs, nothing worked. Have all important data backed up on 3 drives now... :upsidedow :Oh crap
