Bye Bye Blog Spam

I just want to have the first thread about it :) (I hope I have)
There are more to come in the next couple of hours and days once everyone read it. Drastic changes are going to come and a lot of people will have a big problem.
that's enough information for GFY :winkwink:

Google Inc., Microsoft Corp.'s MSN division, Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news) and Six Apart Ltd. announced late Tuesday that they are supporting a tag called "nofollow" to exclude links in blog comments from search-engine crawlers and to prevent spam posts from influencing search rankings.

Dirty F 01-19-2005 05:26 AM

Looks like some people will be out of business then. More money for me.

Trax 01-19-2005 05:27 AM

if done right and if all blog owner "would" update their scripts this will be a huge thing.

Jace 01-19-2005 05:27 AM

that sucks for some, luckily i never resorted to blog spamming to get my rankings

yuvalus 01-19-2005 05:30 AM

If you want something to make you lotta money long-term, you have to be unique.
otehrwiese everyone will do that (gals submitters) or it will be banned (blogs spamming)

have you ever spammed pharmacy on yahoo with throw-away-domains? do you have any idea on how much money is made over there every day. You don't always need something unique. How unique is email spamming these days?

wtf are you talking about lol?
with update their scripts I obviously meant the blog owners updating their blog scripts to bring the new changes into effect.

and as far as this "Most disable commenting totally" goes... that is bullshit as well... if that was true there wouldn't be such a problem and people wouldn't have sites with 50k backlinks lol

Rui 01-19-2005 05:45 AM

This was long due...I can see much people loosing lots of traffic hehehe

Stopor 01-19-2005 05:47 AM

blogs spam still brings money and will bring for a long time. Do not panic

Trax 01-19-2005 06:22 AM

yep but still those are interesting changes as this does not only effect blogs
the new parameter can be used on any site which means there is a lot new possibilities and changes...

That's only just ONE of the benefits of blogs.

There's still TONS of ways to get traffic from blogs

edgeprod 01-19-2005 07:00 AM

Shit, spammers are a valuable source of people to automatically send to places like *******, etc!

:1orglaugh

xclusive 01-19-2005 07:00 AM

interesting

pornstar2pac 01-19-2005 07:02 AM

i never thought of blog spamming until now....

Linguist 01-19-2005 07:07 AM

That's a pretty neat idea, I wonder why they didn't think of it sooner. It'd also apply to guestbook spamming, linkdumps, or any other spammable means where the owner has the control of link generation.

Gene luuuuves blogs. And I luuuuuv Gene for getting me into the game.

I think the nofollow directive is a good step forward. However, it defeats the effect, not the cause. Spammers will still keep on spamming blogs. It will take a good amount of time until you will see a major portion of 8-some million blogs updated, and until then... spammers will still get a kick out of it.

I saw that article and my first thoughts were many of SEO guys are going to cry :Oh crap . If they are doing that to Blogs, you can bet link dumps are right around he corner as well as the other types of site dumbs that are so popular with the SEO spammers.

tranza 01-19-2005 08:31 AM

Uuuuuuuh, aren't you mysterious?

titmowse 01-19-2005 08:38 AM

So, how does HaloScan play into all of this?

I agree, getting top Yahoo rankings are a joke.

Any idiot can do it.

The only other decent source is quietly fading away... Ref spamming.

Furious_Male 01-19-2005 04:05 PM

Good. The guys that truly know SEO will make more money. Perhaps the results will get a bit more relevant as well.

bdld 01-19-2005 04:55 PM

this is a good move on their part, too many people with inflated pr's out there.

I agree, this could be a positive for alot of people.

dcortez 01-19-2005 05:25 PM

1) This seems to be primarily directed at 'off the shelf' blog systems. A custom 'blog' can still pass on PR as it chooses.

2) Link spamming is an understandable problem and it makes sense to squelch it. However, rewarding legitimate links associated with relevant content in a blog is no different than interlinking web pages.

So I guess this is bad news for 'trollers' and anyone who contributes to common blog platforms.

This should not impact anyone participating in custom and/or moderated blogs/forums.
