Anyone ever blow a power supply...

Went outside to smoke a cigarette, came back inside to a computer that had turned itself off...went to power it back up, got a pretty bad shock from the metal power button, then a faint smell of ozone in the back.

This computer is 3 weeks old, this pisses me the fuck off. Power supply was 430W dual fan.

Once one of the fans in a server seized up. This was before the days of fan monitoring/alarms, so the first I knew of it was when it went offline. I got to the site 30 mins later, and the internal metal frame of the case was so hot that I couldn't hold it for more than a couple of seconds.

I have no idea how long the power supply cooked (after the fan seized) before it finally gave out. :winkwink:

I had a power supply go out and just about kill a whole computer.. It fried a $400 video card, 1 gig of ram and two hard drives.

Usually a fan goes and they overheat

baddog 01-18-2005 08:31 PM

I tried, but my tongue got stuck in the fan, so I never tried again

potter 01-19-2005 05:57 AM

I've gone through quite a few.

dcortez 01-19-2005 08:22 AM

Yup, many since 1976.

There's a distinctive (probably carcinogenic) 'aroma' one never forgets after their first PS burnout.

I blew a power supply. Got $20 for it.

Rochard 01-19-2005 09:10 AM

Yeah, I had one blow out on me at the Lightspeed Stuido once. I was just sitting there, minding my own business, when BAM - big noise and a puff of smoke.

Replaced the power supply and the computer was fine.

kowntafit 01-19-2005 09:13 AM

I was doing something stupid on my pc once and the whole thing shit down, tried to start it again and it wouldn,t, I thought I blew the power supply but it turned out I just tripped the switch in the power supply. Not sure where it is, my bro did it but you just flick it back and works like new. Check it out before you invest in another one, could turn out that that's all it is.

jollyperv 01-19-2005 10:43 AM

Just brought it in to get it fixed, the power supply blew and fried the motherboard too...3 weeks old...thank fucking god it was under warranty.
I think my UPS is bad, it was plugged into that, and I noticed as I unplugged it a red light on the UPS said 'faulty wiring error', maybe it sent a surge and blew it.
