is there a new card i have to get so i can go a few miles from home?

I have WLAN as well, but it wont work from very long distances. When i go out from my home, i use GPRS=mobile internet connection wit bluetooth connection to my laptop. It works anywhere in here.
If you are centre in big city you can try to scan available WLAN networks, and use them to get access to internet. Usually most of WLANS are unsecured.

Do you loose the connection from your PC to your router ? Or is it your outgoing line that you loose ?

The outgoing line.

Jace 01-15-2005 05:57 PM

um...you have to get a special card and sign up for one of the mobile wireless services...like sprint

fact is you are on a LAN wireless connection...LOCAL area network....so when you are not local anymore, it won't work

bdld 01-15-2005 06:07 PM

a wireless router is meant to reach 50 ft or so, not 5,000 ft.

XpressMedia 01-15-2005 06:16 PM

I am getting wireless in a week or so. I hope it works better than cable!!

pxxx 01-15-2005 06:21 PM

I went with wireless, because all the cords wasn't cutting it.

venus 01-15-2005 06:26 PM

XpressMedia,
I have wireless internet and cable modem in my house, I have both just incase one goes down I am not without, but with the wireless I am getting 600k up and down, its not as fast as the cable modem, but its not a turtle either. Works great.

Try Sprint or TMobile :thumbsup

xclusive 01-15-2005 06:30 PM

there are lots of hotspots now don't worry

nojob 01-15-2005 07:21 PM

you could get a tmobile, verizon or cingular wireless card to put in your comp and got anywhere with it.

wow, some of the repsonses in here make me question the intelligence level of some of the users of this board

let me point something out to you all...you have to have a internet connection (i.e. cable, dsl, etc) in order to have wireless

you don't go from cable TO wireless

you MAKE your cable connection wireless by adding a wireless device

Its through a local company, $65 a month.

d00t 01-15-2005 07:46 PM

If you want distance you need to take the antena off your router and attach a larger antena that can handle the distance.

Most noobs dont secure their wireless internet anyway... just use other ppls net

my point is that you HAVE to have an existing internet connection in order for your wireless connection to surf the web...regardless if they tell you that all you have a single wireless connection, the fact is that you have a internet connection with wireless capabilities

what is the company name and show me where I woulkd sign up for your service...

Why are you so interested in what ISP I use? Unless you live within a 40 mile radius from here, which I would bet you don't, then you're out of luck. And if you do then without a doubt you've already heard of them.

yes, but their either must be an already existing connection present, or it must be a wireless modem, which also connects to the internet then sends the signal through the built in wireless router

fact still remains, even though you might get a wireless internet bundle, the wireless part of the internet is a seperate thing...internet is not wireless, you make it that way with extra or built on equipment

you need to get satellite internet, you can't expect a home network router to send signals km away

you can get a wireless service with internet all over the city, guessing some wireless connection available to all subscriber, with wireless on every other telephone pole..

I have a wireless router that connects to cable modem that makes my laptop wireless, i can go anywhere in my place, and in my backyard but not to far.

I am pretty sure the first post was about this.

Fucksakes 01-15-2005 08:33 PM

Jace 01-15-2005 08:35 PM

detoxed 01-15-2005 08:50 PM
