What are the most profitable membership based sites, not including dating and porn?

What are your thoughts on this subject?

Twe Russ 01-14-2005 02:16 AM

Your sig says dating, he said besides adult and dating.

Twe Russ 01-14-2005 02:18 AM

I had a site with Bad Cops, but cant tell you results since we never released it to the
public to market, but i believe it would have done well. We also had an up coming vid
of S.W.A.T. take overs.

Things that are questionable will always have an audience, its like the example with a
car crash you see on the highway, you know its fucked up but you still slow down to
take a look.

I realize..

$5 submissions 01-14-2005 02:24 AM

classmates.com makes decent money. Membership-based sites based on school affiliations.

Lexis-Nexis is membership based as well.

Basically, you can make $ off any site that collects information that people use daily or quote from or foster community they value enough to pay for.

I have to say desktop strippers. This is not porn, we even have a 'mainstream' (read non nude) version of it at www.virtuagirls.com
Still converts and retain more than the average porn website.

flashfire 01-14-2005 02:33 AM

not sure on that one...dating and adult are all I know:)

Napolean 01-14-2005 02:34 AM

Every major industry has a site that requires paid subscriptions. The only thing about that is most of the time the industry leader trade mag or service that has been around for years is the one who develops the site that they subscribe to.

For instance, in the music industry it's Billboard their Billboard Bulletin costs several hundred a year and they have several thousand subscribers. Then there's Soundscan (the sales reporting tool) and BDS (the radio airplay tool) that both cost several thousand per subscription yearly.

There's lots of money in business subs. Look at Bloomberg. He's a billionaire. His stock reporting tool was nothing but an early internet terminal.
