Somebody help me... I've just royally screwed myself- Computer techie needed
Trying to be calm here....but I could scream.
Let me start from the beginning. Night before last I left this machine on with tons of images I was editing still in PS, unsaved because I was waiting to run a separate batch process on them after I got them all through my editing process . Bad move leaving work unsaved , I know... Anyhow, when I woke up the next morning, mysteriously my machine had restarted itself. Not the power went out and it was off, but it had actually been restarted because it was prompting me to sign on. Cussed myself for leaving hours of work unsaved, then I figured no biggie and move on. Well, Photoshop somehow got all of my settings reverted back to default as if it were a new program again. My actions still there but everything else gone. Again I figure no biggie. I've been teaching Jake to edit images, so he sits here for 2 hours and edits a gallery for me that I wanted to use tomorrow. After all that, I automate 5 galleries , some for my clients updates and some for mine, including the newly edited one. I notice my settings for the type of gallery to automate ( format ) is reverted back like new again and think that I fix it and carry on, upload galleries to sites. I then delete all the galleries from my machine. Happen to go to my site and actually click on images to see that Photoshop resized my 1200x images to like 300 x and compressed the crap out of them ....so obviously those settings that were reset weren't fixed when I though I did. Problem is.... I deleted that entire gallery of edited images after I uploaded what I thought was all good. Any way in hell my computer has it stored somewhere in cache? Recycle Bin is empty and system restore will only go to earlier today which was earlier than when they were edited . ??? :helpme :helpme Ivy |
temporary internet files maybe

I'm gonna bump my own thread until somebody either tells me I'm screwed or makes my day and says my computer did eat and save them somewhere

If recycle bin is empty and Restore isn't working I'm afraid you're going to be SOL.
Something happened to me recently that caused a lot of things to be cleared/reset. Sounds like you hit something similar, I first thought it was a virus but now I think it was an update of one of my programs gone awry. |
Automatic update does that to your machine. Happened to my office computer the other night. Won't help this time but turning it off now may prevent it from happenng again.

This is not what I want to hear :( Hours of image editing to redo if they are lost

That sucks...sounds like you have some spyware shit or a virus on there

If the 'Recycle Bin' is empty, you won't recover your files in an easy way. But, as those are freshly deleted files, they probably still exist on your disk's magnetic surface and are recoverable using special software.
I have no clue which program is best, though I know for sure that if possible, you should unplug the disk with deleted data and install the recovery software on some other one. The disk space where your deleted files were stored can be overwritten with fresh files thus making old data unrecoverable. |
Search for a program called GetDataBack. Download and install it, it or another program like it may help you recover your content.
I used it on a drive I thought was fried and had not even plugged in for 2 months and I recovered about 95% of my data. |
sounds like they are gone to me

When I first tried it they had a free trial download to see whether or not the software would find what you are looking for. I suggest trying that and if you see your images then buy the unlock code, restore your pics, then thank your lucky stars. |

I'm running the scan now.... I still have the originals on CD, but I just don't want to have to take another couple hours and re-edit Damn I hate when stuff like this happens. And I still don't know what happened and I've lost all my photoshop settings, everything reverted back to Photoshop defaults Ivy |

I knew somebody would say it :winkwink: But normally, once I upload them, I don't need to keep them all locally, and I have the originals on cd's, but something screwed up my gallery format settings in PS :( Ivy |
Do what newbreed said about the data, as for photoshop reverting to default settings... it does that whenever it crashed/reboots while open.
A pain but not really something to worry about. Just double check your actions and edit as needed. Never run a batch till you are sure settings are correct still. Think about getting some firewire drives for your unedited content. That way everything is right there ready for you if you have problems again. |
Do not use that hard drive more than you have to. As you use it it is overwriting your deleted pics. Goggle for ONTRACK File recovery. it is under 80.00 US and will let you get back deleted files as long as the pc has not over written on the disk.
