galleryseek 01-13-2005 10:24 AM

what the FUCk? most women like lord of the rings? that's bullshit.

shawshank redemption is a good movie.

most of the other movies seem to suck though.

dunefield 01-13-2005 10:26 AM

apart from

Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Le (2001)

that top 10 is shit...

DaddysGirl 01-13-2005 10:28 AM

Furious_Male 01-13-2005 10:31 AM

Hi there, idiot.
Here's a clue on why that list is stupid: 7 of the top 10 movies are from after 2000. The LotR movies are ranker #1, 3 and 4. Citizen Kane is not in the top 10, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is. Shichinen no Samurai is not in the top 10, Finding Nemo is.

Now, you may rank movies on scale ranging from Rambo to LotR, but that makes you ignorant, not me.

DaddysGirl 01-13-2005 10:38 AM

This is all based on opinion....like assholes, everyone has one

Sorry, but that is bullshit. There are things such as craftsmanship, originality, authenticity, talent, vision, etc.

Ashkenazy is a better pianist than I am, just like Cézanne was a better painter than I am. Those are not opinions, they are facts - facts that every sane person would comprehend.

Actually it doesn't...just because you don't like the genre or can compreend it it doesn't mean it sucks..

Let me guess Ben Stiller and Silvester Stalone fan? :disgust

Kard63 01-13-2005 10:50 AM

The overall list has shawshank #1 until the godfather overtook it about two years ago. Looks like the women have much better taste.

I've never tasted a man.

if someone who is an authority on the quality of how a movie is produced tells me that a movie is great based on the techinical aspect, or the fact that there is great talent or vision means that Im automatically gonna say its a great movie is ridiculous. I may think its horrible. Everyone looks for something different in a movie. it may contain all the above mentioned aspects in their best form and I may still hate it. its all about the opinion of the movie goer!

You may enjoy watching Ernest Goes To Camp, but if you consider it to be the best movie ever and vote it a 10 on imdb you're an idiot. Likewise, I really like the Bouncing Souls - a punk group - yet I have the intelligence to see that on a musical level, they are simply not as good as the Beatles or Mozart.

ok, so define "Best"...."Best IN YOUR OPINION may mean x-y-z, and IN MY OPINION, Earnest Goes to Camp (hypothetically)was so damn funny and it fit into MY defintion of "Best funny movie" You have your own critieria of what are the best movies and I have mine...they are called OPINIONS. For you to say its a FACT that x-y-z was the best movie is ludicrious. besides what is know as fact, noone could debate about, right?

badmunchkin 01-13-2005 01:02 PM

I'm actually amazed at how un-girly this list is. Most of the girls I've gone out with didn't have nearly such good taste in flicks. My ex's favorite movies all have Tim Allen or Meg Ryan in them. :disgust :helpme

Why is he an idiot, cuz it's his favorite movie? Everyone's entitled to have their own taste. I mean, not everyone likes black cars for instance.

You really can't compare a punk group like Bouncing Souls with the Beatles either lol, it's apples to oranges. :pimp

lol Hey punky... people have different criteria when rating films... The most important criteria for most is simply.. did they enjoyed the movie... Isnt what movie are made for.. entertain you?

Why the fuck would you rate a Mozart CD a 10 if you cannot stand the music??

Women do like shitty movies.

I love all these people trying to argue that anything is good because you like it or because it's popular.

Film, like any art, is judged by its originality and influence, not popularity.

Look at Titanic. Incredibly popular but a steaming pile of shit.

Let me start by denying the validity of your conclusion. Everything can be debated. That the earth is round is a fact. That the earth is flat once was a fact. Facts are generally considered to be the consensus on a given issue by the experts in the area in question.

Aside from that, I did not say that there is a "best" in art, for indeed there isn't. There are quite a few things of such a level of quality that deciding between them would be impossible. However, it is quite possible to discern between "good", "great", "decent", "mediocre" and "bad" movies.

There are things like convincing acting, originality, good cinematography , a well-written plot, etc. which are necessary parts of a good movie. And that is in fact what the very word "good" in this context means, it refers to the quality of a movie, and that in turn is determined by the quality of its components. To equate "good" with "enjoyable" is either to reject language or to fail to understand it.
Now, you could completely reject criteria such as the ones I mentioned. You could also use a whole new set of criteria, like "how many times per minute the color red can be seen in the movie". But that would be ridiculous. There are certain things that constitute the main parts of a movie, and the quality of those and the way they fit together is what determines the quality of a movie.

Something can be your favorite movie even though you still realize its quality is only decent or even mediocre. Personal preference does not have to cause partial blindness.

Aside from that, sure you can compare the Bouncing Souls to the Beatles. The Bouncing Souls made some rather monotonous and simple yet still very catchy and entertaining tunes, the Beatles entirely changed the very definition of music and its place in society in society. See how easy that was?

No, movies are not solely made to entertain you. It may come as a surprise to you, but movies, like most other artforms, also have other goals, like making you think, criticizing society, creating new aesthetic ideals, studying the human condition, or even discussing the nature of art itself.
Enjoying a movie is a good criterium for rating how much you liked the movie, but not for how good a movie is. A movie may raise a very disturbing issue, and may therefore actually be unpleasant to watch. Obviously, that by itself would not make it a bad movie.

You have raised an important point, though. The idea that the only important things in life are enjoyment and entertainment is exactly the reason why western society right now is ultimately decadent and empty. People strive for an existence of complete apathy. Thinking takes too much effort.

As for why you would rate "a cd by Mozart" (Mozart didn't make cd's, dude) a 10 if you didn't like it... because it's good music. Quite simple. Even if you don't like it, if you know anything at all about music you know that his music is simply very good. The flow, the way it's put together, the way different themes are explored and different emotions are conveyed are all simply done very, very well.

pxxx 01-13-2005 06:02 PM

Most of those movies are amazing.

media 01-13-2005 06:41 PM

Bottom rated: 1. 2.1 Gigli (2003) 1,568

that seems pretty accurate
