I really think im depressed - what should i do?

I cant go to my family doctor, he's too close to my parents - I really would rather no one know about this and fix it on my own without having family/friends involved. I dont really know where you would go if you're depressed.. simply going to a walk-in clinic doesn't seem right.

Are there simple, low risk drugs I could take to help out? I know Xanax will ease you up, but will it make you happier?

I'd rather not go on about the details - but this has been going on for a few years now and I'm sick of feeling this way. And yes, I'm a regular on GFY

someguy102 01-12-2005 01:09 AM

Internet messageboard advice probably got you in the situation you are in now. Get some real help, guy.

JDog 01-12-2005 01:13 AM

Go to a doctor - try a different one other than your family doctor. That's if you don't get out of it. I have the depression spells where I'll be depressed for a week or so, then get out of it.

Ain't that the truth. Go to the doctor or call a help line. There are some good webistes that can give you advice , but most of them are sponsered by the manufacturers of rxs.

Seriously tough just go to your doctor. Doesn't matter if he's close to your family he is not allowed to tell anyone anything. It's the law. Also you act ASHAMED of it. There nothing to be ashamed of. Hemmorhoids yes, depression no.

xNetworx 01-12-2005 01:20 AM

Get some pills from a doc... ASAP!

quantum-x 01-12-2005 01:22 AM

It's important that you do something about it :)

Remember also, that your family doctor is bound by privacy, so can't legally mention it to your family or friends.

That out of the way, depression isn't a 'weakness' or something you should be ashamed of. Here in australia, 1 in 5 people suffer from depression, and sadly 1 in 3 of these people never seek help.

Depression is usually a lack of / mal-adjustment of serotonin levels in your brain.

THIS IS IMPORTANT- when you see someone, it is VITAL that they only put you on a SEROTONIN REPLACEMENT drug (such as Zoloft), as opposed to uppers / xanax etc.

These tablets are not an instant fix, and often life circumstances have to be adjusted too, so it's generally a good idea to let family know what you're going through.

In addition to that, studies show that it is also genetic - so you could be experiencing something that your family has already been going through.

Incidently, I know about this, I went through it a few years back.

Take care, and make sure you're not put on hard drugs.

Persius 01-12-2005 01:22 AM

find something new for you to do.. hiking... running sports.. walking at nights going to the pool ... talk to one of your best friends at the least

try meditation or physical exercise

Semi-Retired-Dave 01-12-2005 02:20 AM

Might just be a temporary problem. It happens to all of us.
What do you think a Dr. will do to help out. Those pills don't work, drugs don't work, Alchol doesn't work.

Talking about it usually does.

Disclaimer: I have no beef with you.

That out of the way, it's this type of education/opinion/etc that ensures people with depression will never be totally understood.

People recognise that a broken leg hahahaha an ailment, herpes hahahaha ailment, but jsut because you can't see symptoms physically does NOT invalidate the person's state.

You're ignore volumes and volumes of proof and research, which I won't insult those who know by going over.

I'm not sure where in the world the original poster is, but I recommend they hit

Good advice, but sadly I think you're missing the point / have never suffered depression.

It's not a self image problem, it's not a 'temporary' problem. It needs to be addressed, and by enveloping yourself in things like women, booze / drugs etc, it does NOTHING but entrench the situation.

Libertine 01-12-2005 02:33 AM

Clinical depression can, in many cases, only be treated with long-term medication. A few talks with a shrink won't help, getting laid a few times won't help, and popping a xanax every once in a while won't help.

Damian_Maxcash 01-12-2005 02:43 AM

Go see a shrink......

I thought I was just a bit "unhappy/odd"..... I saw a shrink and I worked out that I had Bi-Polar and BPD!

I take 3 little pills once a day and I have never been better

I take Venlafaxine and its great, but I tried quite a few before I found this one that worked.

I used to think it was normal to spend 90% of my life under a cloud..... ITS NOT!!

com 01-12-2005 02:45 AM

smoke good chronic

beemk 01-12-2005 02:48 AM

try exercising

DWB 01-12-2005 05:29 AM

Dont be ashamed man. Just know that you have to do something about it and work it every day.

Excerise helps. Eat better, feel better.

Pills help. See your doc for the rigt ones. You may need to experiement with them to find one that's best for you.

Stay active. Do something. Dont just sit around and let yourself get bummed.

Get a new hobby. Work your mind and do new things.

Best of luck.

colorsoundoblivion 01-12-2005 05:32 AM

science is quick to solve emotinal problems with pills when we honestly don't understand JACK about what emotions are

Some of it is right, some is not. Regarding the medication, you're mixing things up. Xanax is a benzo, prescribed for pathologic fears, not for depression. For the latter indication, you may try an antidepressant, for example an SSRI like Zoloft, naturally on prescription by a doctor and not some fishy pharma site.

titmowse 01-12-2005 06:52 AM

Please go get professional help. Find a counselor who will challenge you and make you mad, mad enough to get better. If that counselor is licensed to prescribe medication, cool. But seritonin uptake deficiency or not, once your meds kick in, you'll still have lifestyle patterns that must be changed.

Xanax is a downer and would do the trick to his problem, he would be in a much
better mood, get a great nights rest, & when you wake up you will forget your
problems and the world.
