am i reading it right, Germany and Australia gave close to 1 Billion $ ?

BlackCrayon 01-11-2005 06:30 PM

canada upped its donation to some 485mil i believe, over time.

nojob 01-11-2005 06:33 PM

The money is nice, but it wont replace the lives that it took.

Living For Today 01-11-2005 06:40 PM

That figure for Australia is a little low. It was already over $6 per person before the telethon which raised over 15 million and the world vs asia cricket match which also raised over 15 million. our population is around 20 million :thumbsup

fris 01-11-2005 06:46 PM

I think it actually IS some sort of wealth indicator for the most part

(and not so much about people in other countries being "heartless")

Anna_O 01-11-2005 06:55 PM

Sweden has collected a large amount also in private donations. We have had several fundraising events and TV and newspapers run campaigns 24 hrs a day. Don't know why we aren't on that list yet though.

No, it isn't a wealth indicator, although wealth is one of the contributing factors.

Did Germany have some special interest over there? It's kind of strange for that particular country to donate so much to this crisis.

I agree. What do you think we'll spend on all the military assistance we're giving? The naval vessels that are ferrying in food, water, medical supplies, etc? The Marines off the amphibious units that are searching for bodies, helping to clean up and rebuild?

You can be sure the US will spend far more than 1Bill. before this is over.

It's not that poor. They have a pretty big middle-class and it's growing a lot.
Wages for simple jobs are crazy low there.. Give it 5-10 years, and their new EU membership will help them a lot ;)
