Why is perception more important than reality?

On GFY

I bet this thread dies fast.

good question, here's a bump for ya. :)

People react on perception.

Rictor 01-10-2005 10:06 PM

Because GFY is not based in reality. It's a fantasy land that's anchored to reality by a strand of dental floss.

misty_dayz 01-10-2005 10:09 PM

Maybe because most of us deal with perception rather than reality.

Do you really think all those girls get their cherry popped every scene?
Do you really believe all the girls are "innocent and 18"?

We tell people what we think they might want to hear. I think some of us have forgotten what reality is.

Perception is the first impression, the mental image that is first imprinted in the brain. Reality takes research and understanding. If they perceive you one way, despite the reality or facts proving different, over the years, they'll remember you the way they've first perceived you.

perception is reality

It's easier. Reality is a much tougher thing than perception. It's easier to base an opinion on something like a perception (right or wrong) rather than take the time to dig into it and find out the true reality - for most people that is.

dcortez 01-10-2005 10:33 PM

To grasp and act on reality takes consideration and effort.

GFY seems to appeal to a large number of participants who tend to react impulsively rather than address issues objectively. I suspect age and relative lack of life experience are factors which may contribute to this.

To my amazement (and amusement), I've watched lynch mobs form here in less than two minutes based on single unsubstantiated allegations.

Anyone doing a thesis on crowd theory has to do some time here. It's text book to the max.

Don't get me wrong - I love GFY. Where else can I get such a great mix of business and entertainment!

People have a perception of me some of it is true some of it is not, I cannot determine how others view me unless I've done something outright like lied about who I am.
The only thing I try to concern myself with is to live up to their expectations when it comes to my services.

Reality is based largely on perception. You will ony achieve true enlightment when you realize that everything is an illusion.

Irony is GFY, Met Art give away $7000 but you must have some talent to win and get 200 posts but lengendary liars give away $2000 just for posting allot and get 4000 posts

What you first percieve and then store in your memory as experience IS your reality, whether on GFY or "out there" and since no two people have had exactly the same experiences since birth, everyone's reality is different from everyone elses. Since most of us have failry similiar "realities" we can communicate and interact but if they are totally divergent then we couldn't even see each other. :)

edit: I don't think you were looking for the metaphysical answer on this one, sorry.

Whether on GFY or otherwise... perception is the bullshit that people are dumb enough to think is relevant. Much of this may not even be factual but assumption. Most of the time it is irrelevant and anything but balanced, but idiots need something to ... whatever, aspire to or accept in their minds.

Perception is the marketers main tool - tell em some crap product with a brand label is of value and it sells to others who can show their possession to friends and influence them with some of their own perception:-) All crap! :-)

On a personal level, it's far safer to dump perception and see how people perform in real life over time - then decide whether ya want to know em or not :-)
