I need one which can do subcategories and is preferabloe making real pages rather than dynamic or a folder per category

Linkupgold - I use it heavily on many sites and it works great. Not the cheapest on the market but not too expensive and has every feature you need. Written by a VERY helpful guy who's also usually happy to make small changes either free of for a very small charge.

I think Jays-XXX-Links uses Linkadmin

Most big guys use linkadmin.
It's a very advanced script.

I want to spend some money on it..... however, are there any free or GPL scripts to compare?

Goss threads always used to be free (for non-commercial use - which seemed to mean everyone and his dog) but despite user bolt-ons was severely limited in the areas it mattered. For functionality there really is no 'good' free links script.
