WTF? Snow Shuts Down Interstate 5 North of LA

We've got some very serioius weather issues in this country. WTF? And read below where Lake Tahoe got 9 feet of snow.

Snow Shuts Down Major California Highway

LOS ANGELES - Heavy snow shut down a major highway north of Los Angeles on Monday and slowed post-holiday travel in the Sierra Nevada as Californians grappled with a second week of stormy weather.

About 2 feet of snow shut down Interstate 5 at Tejon Pass north of Los Angeles, stranding some travelers, and the California Highway Patrol said the state's main north-south highway was expected to stay closed there all day.

At lower elevations in the Los Angeles region, flooding closed the Long Beach Freeway at the Pacific Coast Highway.

Some ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area reported as much as 9 feet of snow since late last week.

The latest storm is expected to linger through Tuesday, and another storm was approaching from the Pacific and expected to strike later this week.

MissMiranda 01-03-2005 02:31 PM

if any of you have ever driven the grape vine (5) before you would know that it gets shut down alot because of moderate to sever weather.

rain/fog/snow.. it happens all the time because of how high up and how curvey the road is.

Pornwolf 01-03-2005 02:32 PM

Something really strange is goin on right now.

lol, not in Cali though... I can never ever remember having this much rain here in Ca... And it snowed like mad on the way to Vegas today. Unreal an very unusual

adrenalinedef 01-03-2005 04:29 PM

9 feet of snow will turn to 15 feet of rain when its melted. Glad I dont have a place on the lake, it will flood when the sun comes out.

Um yeah. Only in Bizzaro World ;)

Rule of thumb is about 8-12" of snow is equivalent to 1" of rain.

pxxx 01-03-2005 04:58 PM

this whole weather changing stuff is crazy.

Ecstasy Glass 01-03-2005 05:48 PM

I drove up to McCloud, CA near Mt. Shasta, last Saturday. It is way up north on I-5, fairly close to the Oregon border. My buddies house is at about 3200 feet and when I left, there was about 5 feet of snow at his house. Tahoe definitly got hit harder, but it was awesome up there. :) And he told me that they got about another 2 feet by the next day. :helpme

I too cannot remember getting this much rain and snow in such a short period, even in our last El Nino year it didn't get this bad.

MBS Auto 01-03-2005 06:24 PM

It happens EVERY year

Sosa 01-03-2005 06:25 PM

yep I seen that on one of the LA News feeds earlier. Crazy shit, I would expect to see that here in Nebraska.

no, 3 inchs of snow is equivalent to 9 inchs of rain

So 9 feet of snow would be around 15 feet of rain if not more

That makes no sense at all..
go get some snow, put 3 inches of it in a glass, let it melt, and see if it magically makes more.

You are surely confused, bro. I live up here in Northern Cali, and I can definitly say we didn't have anywhere near 15 feet of rain. :1orglaugh

MissEve 01-04-2005 06:34 PM

Meanwhile its 40+ here in Anchorage, AK, all of the snow is melting, the lake I live on is covered with melted ice, crazy!
