Verbal Geeks, Help!

Is there any one word that is MOST OFTEN used to describe the basic way hot-air balloons "go" ?

For example, cars run or drive; people walk, etc.

And I'm not looking for anything poetic like levitate, float, ghost or throb -- as in "...throbbing on the horizon, like desperate peaches at the apex of their ripeness..."

Also, any terms used to describe other flying things will have to pass the test of MOST OFTEN USED -- so that verbs like fly or glide or drift could not be chosen unless they were ESPECIALLY associated with hot-air balloons, more than any other.

What ya got?

I'd say "fly" is going to be the most often used.

Birds do it, planes do it, kites do it... lots of objects share that word. I can't think of any one word that is used exclusively for hot air balloons.

Float is what i'm thinking

I believe the word you are looking for is "rise". A hot air balloon rises off the ground. :2 cents:

I seond FLOAT

OzMan 01-02-2005 07:02 PM

I would say fly also, since they are an aircraft.

What is the context, sounds like a crossword or something....?

If I understand what you're looking for, the words that fit best are float, rise, drift, waft and so on. If you are specifically looking for the way they "go", rise is almost certainly the best choice.

Actually, I prefer ascend to rise. Hot air balloons ascend.

oh, ascend, I didn't think of that. good one.

...god I need to get out more. :Oh crap

Kimmykim 01-02-2005 07:14 PM

circumnavigate, aviate, remain aloft... ascend, rise, fly, float, or maybe even operate.

Jack, why on earth are you trying to find a word that's likened more to hot air ballooning than any other method of air transport?

Too bad we can't re-coin zeppelin as a verb ;)

I thought the drifting suggestion was pretty good. Actually, this is what dictionary.com said about it.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=balloon

v. bal·looned, bal·loon·ing, bal·loons
v. intr.

1. To ascend or ride in a balloon.
2. To expand or swell out like a balloon. See Synonyms at bulge.
3. To increase or rise quickly.

v. tr.

To cause to expand by or as if by inflating.

Well the verbs most frequently used are variations of "Flight"

Rise, float, land, lift and others are actions that take place during the flight process

"A hot air balloon flight"
"Some experienced pilots are able to take a flight in one direction, rise to a different altitude to catch wind in a returning direction. "
"This is sometimes called a box effect, usually when flying in valleys with drainage winds."
How to Fly a Balloon

RE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_air...ght_techniques

This is similar to the terminology used in Rocket ship flight - you have take off, lift, land, boost, but in essence, it is describing the action of flying.

2HousePlague 01-03-2006 06:41 AM

does this suggest a more definitive verb?

http://www.amazingaerial.com/images/90.jpg

it betokens a trip, which demands navigation -- in other words FULL, exclusive concentration.

2HP, the word you are looking for is sailing
that's actually the word balloon enthusiasts use...they used to have a regatta (yes...that's what they call a bunch of them) that always flew over my house as a kid...it was cool to look at and i always hoped one would crash in my backyard...not sure why though...
