I Never Realized How Many People Live On The Coasts

515 Counties in the US border the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf of Mexico.

60% of the US Population now lives in a county bordering an ocean. That's about 170 Milllion people.

Kind of crazy that we've built up so much of our infrastructure in these risky locations when you think about it.

If something like the Asian Tsunami's hits the US east or west coast, you've got major population center cities that could be taken out in a flash. Just in South Florida alone we have 6 million people living next to the Atlantic Ocean in just 3 counties.

I'm uneasy even going to the beach now, when you look out and realize how much water is out there.

A good quote I heard once from a base jumper was when he was asked (after his friend had just died base jumping), if he'd continue to base jump. His response was "If your friend died in a car crash, how would you get to his funeral?"

Can't live life being afraid. If you like the beach, enjoy it, because either way you've only got a short period of time here.

actually no... this quote is sort of stupid because you HAVE to drive a car (or at least ride in one) to get any long distance in a resonable time. you don't HAVE to jump off the highest thing u can find for an adrenalin kick. if u die from a car crash, THAT is an accident. if u die from base jumping, you're just stupid.
