Would you host your members area on Cogent bandwidth?

Would you host your members area on Cogent bandwidth with a VERY reliable host? It would save us 100% in the hosting price.

Dax 01-01-2005 11:28 AM

100% You mean u get cogent for free?

Cuz I host mine in Geocities and so far so good!

UltraSonic 01-01-2005 11:28 AM

Never mind, editted

pxxx 01-01-2005 11:29 AM

Yeah, Sly is the man to talk to here.

Sly 01-01-2005 11:34 AM

Personally I would only use Cogent for galleries and similar free sites. Some will agree, others will disagree. My theory is if somebody is paying me to access my site, they deserve the extra $5 per mbps for premium bandwidth. Depending how much bandwidth you need, I can probably save you a crapload of money and still have you running on premium bandwidth. Feel free to hit me up if you would like to discuss.

No, as in We will be paying $500 a month for cogent or $1000 a month for premium, therefore a 100% savings

Hmmm NO.. 500 is 50% of 1000 ... and u are going down in price.. if you were paying 500 and will pay 1000 then u are going up 100%... but if u are paying 1000 and want to pay 500 that is a 50% reduction.

Math 101 :)

Oh, and by the way, I have seen tour conversions and site retention increase by using better quality bandwidth. Think about it from a surfers standpoint for a minute.

What you need to do is decide whether or not the cost of higher bandwidth will pay for itself with the better conversions and retention.

cayne 01-01-2005 11:59 AM

didn't hear much positive about cogent bw.

VirtuMike 01-01-2005 02:05 PM

Not voluntarily. We've had people swap out our fine bandwidth for cogent without our knowledge or permission. That doesn't happen anymore.

TheFrog 01-01-2005 02:07 PM

not for the members area not worth the risk even if it is small

Ok, same difference :)

Paparazzi 01-01-2005 02:23 PM

don't use cogent for your members area :2 cents:

69pornlinks 01-01-2005 02:38 PM

don't shortchange customers, lol..i see if you're running a freesite of something...don't try to cut cost when it comes to your custmoers it will bite you in the ass in the long run....

hydro 01-01-2005 02:45 PM

depends on what you retention rate is. If they only stay for a month and its been that way for a while knock your self out with cogent. If you have good retention i wouldn't use cogent

I bet if someone posted 2 links to two sites, one with cogent and one with "premium bandwidth" nobody would notice a difference.

Boss Traffic Jim 01-01-2005 03:11 PM

Never !!!! It's not worth it in the long run. :2 cents: :2 cents:

Manowar 01-01-2005 03:13 PM

No, No i wouldn't.

xclusive 01-01-2005 03:16 PM

Treat your customers right and give them the good stuff and you will make a lot more in the long run..

Magg 01-01-2005 03:32 PM

I bet you can get quality bandwidth for the same price youre getting that cogent at, and the bandwidth would be guaranteed available 24/7 :winkwink:

andrej_NDC 01-01-2005 03:55 PM

Why would you do that? Its not like with galleries where you have to take the risk not to convert. Your members are already paying, its not a risk, give them what they deserve.

i second that. the price of bandwidth has gone down and the quality of bandwidth has gone up.

it's simple... switch to cogent... put a poll in the members area and ask... has loading the site/content improved, remained the same, or decreased. i'm sure you'll find an answer in a week or less!

some people still will never change even if they see savings smacking them right in the face... just because cogent sucked before doesn't mean they suck now. btw. i don't use cogent so i don't know how they are now... maybe someone will be kind enough and post their results and help us all :)

:2 cents:
