It is human nature to be selfish, that's how laws were born. People getting together and saying "I don't want that fucker getting into MY shit." Thus, we protect each other out of self interest. That's why the USSR fell, it could not sustain itself with an ideal of selflessness, because people are basically selfish and will always and ultimately do what is in their own self interest. If you say "from each according to his ability and to each according to his need", then you'll end up with a bunch of people with little ability and large needs.

I wish to fuck folks would quit posting utter bullshit on these threads when they ain't got the first clue about suffering or even how much is needed to relieve that suffering.

Even govts have not clue yet as to what is involved. All we have is a load of bullshit figures all about "pledges" and "proposals" - that bear no relation to what may be needed.

As for the US - they also have no clue. Any figures are just meaningless. However, like almost all people across the globe, US citizens are giving substantially to numbers of organisations.

Man.. this ain't a time to be whining about others and what they give or don't give. There are people dying out there and it is not known how much help they need.

I was just joking but agree 100% with you. Its sad to see people saying stuff like america hasnt donated enough or just doesnt care. Bush just can't take money when he wants and send it wherever he sees fit. Donating hundreds of millions of dollars requires the ok from congress. These people should focus more on actually helping the people instead of comparing digits.

How about this (not directed at anyone in specific): Instead of whining about what OTHERS AREN'T doing, worry about what YOU ARE doing.

I don't doubt the US will do more as well as other nations. And.. yes, agree Bush is the same any any leader - they just can't make statements as they see fit about giving taxpayers money away. Eg.. the UK govt muttered utter crap about donating $1.8m .. big mistake!! :-) That ain't enough to have a party!:-) That has since risen to around $100m, but even that is a piss in the ocean.

All this is far too early to start condemning/praising/whatever countries for what they may or not do. It's much more relevant to be helping the people in that region.

Until the degree of damage is known, it's hard to say much, - but sure looks VERY bad and probably the biggest natural disaster in our lifetimes.

forward 12-31-2004 05:01 PM

if you don't see 350 million, from the government, to be a MORE than generous donation, then you are a fuckin fool.

most of the world never backs our decisions or will even utter the words "hey, i like the US", but when their country gets wiped out who's standing on our front porch with a red bucket and a bell ring-ding-dingin' for a buck.

If anything I would think we could be more selfish and quit helping everyone out and seeing just how fuckin great they do on their own.

I don't know if, eg 350 million is MORE than a generous donation. I don't consider stuff like that as a "donation" when many lives are at stake.

One thing I suspect will happen over time is FAR more money than that will be issued, - even by the UK alone who seems to be talking around $100mill at the moment. I suspect their "donation" may well involve over 1 billion US $ and who knows how much more.

Overall.. this ain't no million stuff - it's billions.

Webby 12-31-2004 05:11 PM

And... in the middle of this and in the longer term, - there are amazing opportunties!!

Webby 12-31-2004 05:15 PM

Thinking... 1 billion US is only .. roughly around 600-700mill UK pounds - it's fuck all under these circumstances. It barely covers the cost of a couple of fighter jets.

QuaWee 12-31-2004 06:40 PM

Well considering they probably need billions to rebuild...What all the countrys donated so far won't really put a dent in it :(

If every country in the United Nations donates as much as the US, then it's covered. Unfortunately, the world expects 100 times more from the US than any other country.

You're a fucking moron, congrats :thumbsup

Charitable organizations assets in the US are over 1/2 a Trillion dollars right now.

That's $500,000,000,000.00

I challenge you to show me any other country's numbers close to ours.

If their assets amount to .5 trillion, wouldn't that imply that they had in fact not spent that .5 trillion to help people? (at least, people in other countries - homeless shelters are assets too, after all)

That's the amount placed into charitable organizations. Charitable foundations are required under IRS rules to disburese a minimum of 5% of their asset base annually.

Has anyone said how much they think the damage will actually cost?

I'm mainly interested to see how much its going to cost in terms of food and medical aid and stuff, as its very difficult to measure the cost of i.e. a hut-house that got destroyed..

th3g4me 12-31-2004 10:52 PM

they dont need jet fighters though... wtf?

QuaWee 12-31-2004 11:06 PM

Another fucking brain dead retard statement from presumably another vitriolic US moron who assumes enemies where there are none.

Do you not even watch your own news reports - or any? The whole world is aware very few, if any have one clue about the extent of the damage in Asia.

I don't expect ya to be so pathetic as to try and claim any govt does have a clue - if they do, they must have some crystal ball.

Despite that - Happy New Year and may you have a better one!! :winkwink:
