Is playing video games a waste of time for webmasters?
We work for ourselves. Every free minute can make us $$$ if we want it to. The games that are out now are so good that they end up killing days of our time before we know it. Is it worth killing that time playing a game?
|
Just save it for the weekend or the end of your day, if you cant control yourself. ;)

free time and the need for a distraction is good for your overall business. You'll burn out if you spend every waking moment on work.
matter of fact, I'm about to get on xboxlive...Look for 'MrNoGoodDotCom' |

You guys don't feel bad about doing nothing for stretches of time? I stopped buying games after Metal Gear Solid after I did some calculations of what each waking hour is worth to me.
Hell, your average family in America made less than what I lost by killing productive time playing games when the PS2 came out. Do you ever look at it that way? |

Waste of time? Maybe, maybe not.
If you can bang on HALO 2, we got 2 big ass plasma's to play it at our booth, 462. Winner gets the Championship Belt for this year. We'll also have a Madden day, if you think you got skills in that game. |
well i dont think days is good but everyone needs a break

only Civ3

I have the same conflicts with my Xbox.
On one hand it relieves a LOT of stress to just kill motherfuckers in HALO 2 or whatever, but on the other you're like beating yourself up for wasting so much time. I usually wait until I get ahead and can predict a solid week of some downtime and THEN go buy a game I know will eat up time. I waited like 3 weeks before snatching up Halo 2. |
I love playing Unreal Tournament 2004, but i only get a couple of days a week to play.. :thumbsup
|
It's definitely a huge time-waster, but it's one of the only things I can do that will IMMEDIATELY take my mind off of work. I think it's important to give my head a break from porn and the constant brainstorming of new and creative ways to exploit myself. Video games provide me with something inconsequential to hyperfocus on.
The big problem is not knowing when to stop. I hate myself when I play so long that I'm not even having fun anymore. How much video game time is a break and how much is a waste? |
im bout to go get into some xbox live myself
yo bvf whats up, when do you want to 1 v 1 on halo? |
I go on and off them. I'll play them a couple times a week, but the last time I played a game to beat it was Transformers: Armada on the PS2 and it took about 12 hours of playing time over a week. I also beat Silent Hill 3, but that was playing one evening every month or so with my friend. Now I'm using BloodRayne 2 to get my mind off things for a half hour here or there. I stay away from the MMORPG's, though. That's just asking for trouble. :)
|
I have a friend trying to get me to play World of warcraft but i have a fear that it would consume me. Ive stayed away from MMORPGS just because of this reason but it seems like i might get sucked in.

I play at least an hour of Call of Duty a day... Its good to shoot people on a daily basis

It's good to take a break from all the work now and then, if you can control yourself...i'm bad so so bad, i can't play just an hour or two, when i play i play all day and all night, i play til my figers are too fat and tired to move anymore and my eyes are bout to pop out my head :( :Oh crap
|
I'm not saying taking a break is bad. You have to. But we all know how addictive these games can be. I've been smoking the crack pipe called RPG's since The Legend Of Zelda came out in 86. Trust me I know how addictive they can be.
Which leads me to my point, isn't it counter productive for us to even turn them on? It's not like we are 9-5 Joe Schmoes who have tons of free time after work, on the weekends plus the holidays to fuck off and do whatever they like. Every time you reach in the back of that PS2 and click the switch you effectively kill the time you could be making a gallery, or free sites, or thousands of optimized SE pages, or designing a pay site, or buying Adwords or galleryspots and on and on... That 2 hours if used right easily makes you a couple hundred or more in this business. Regular working stiffs don't have that option, we do. |
There is a time for everything and everyone needs break sometimes, as long as it doesn't get into you work time or have some negative effect over you I think it's totally fine to kick back and play game sometime.
|
I had to stop buying games... I spend 12 hours solid playing if I get started.

You need the downtime that's what gfy to me is if I code html or php too long it drives me nuts
|
I only play games that take no more than an hour at a time.. online FPSers, RTS, etc.
|
The last few mega games like The Prince of Persia, Grand Theft Auto and others knocked weeks if not months off of a lot of usually rationally thinking people's lives. Is this acceptable?
|
It's your own life, as long as your enjoy what you do. Keep doing it :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup
|
I use it to relief stress sometimes. I don't go over board on playing though
|
ps2 ownz you

I typically limit myself to one or two rounds, then back to work. |
1 or 2 rounds? That's willpower. I don't know many people that can do that. 1 or 2 hours yes, 1 or 2 rounds no.
|
All work and no play, will eventualy fuckin kill you.
