Using A Wireless Network, your NEIGHBORS....
My neighbor just bought a wireless router. I have been putting off buying one until after the first but he says I can use his now. My question is this: will he be able to access my files or does the firewall in the Network Connections protect me.
(p.s. he knows what I do and would love to get some freebies, not worried about the little shit, only the biz/financial/personal, etc... stuff). THX- :thumbsup |
Is your neighbor your mother father or brother? If not then hell no.
Unless you encrypt everything and tunnel through to a server you trust and allow that trusted server to be your gateway, he will be able to snoop on everything you do online, including sniff out your passwords for every non SSL login session (which is many sponsors unfortunately).
I wouldn't unless you know what you're doing, or he has no idea what he's doing
He's a single guy, 40+...
i'm using my neighbors but he doesnt know :X
Not worth the risk
Is 11Mbps about the standard or should I go higher?
you should always use a secure encrypted vpn connection anyway :) vpnfind.com

I'm at my fathers place now, connected to a connection of somebody in the building.... :thumbsup
He oesn't seem like a hacker, so he probably not will be able to get in your puter. Just make sure that " sharing" is off. At home, in my living room, I access another connection, so if mine is own temporarely, I can use that "other" one... |
I don't like wireless internet. Important data goes in the air, someone can sniff it, use it for whatever they want to :2 cents: I like my 1 gbit lan, it rocks, when I transfer big files over my network, I can hit 80+ megs/s or so, thats all I want :winkwink:
yeah man don't do that wireless internet thing.. You never know, because even if he doesn't have the knowlege to sniff passwords etc, he might just out of curiosity start learning....
get your own :) |
boner 2.0 the wireless thing is only good for laptop and/or internet use.. I don;t think wired networking can be substituted, because even if you only have 10/100 network you still can do a lot of lan traffic :)

does this guy have a clue as to how to sniff a packet? odds are no. id rock his shit and be happy. hell call your cable company and have yours turned off, and pay him a 12 pack a month.

LOL... Do you have an idea of how many knows what a wep key is ???? 10% maybe. They buy it, plug it , enter the access codes in the router, and bingo it works. End of installation |
Make sure to get a router with WPA encryption. Not WEP
it shouldnt be a problem, he cant see any of your files unless he's a real tech wizard.

him in the face. |
password protect any of your shares
Make sure to enable IEEE 802.1x authentication, than you'll be fine...
I wouldnt... too risky when u run your biz from home. If it was somebody who didnt work at home and you just checked email and surfed google, etc. But that guy might end up having a few beers with the wrong guy at a local strip club who tells him what he can do with that kind of setup and yu end up fucked.
Don't broadcast your sid, and change it from the default. This will help a bit to keeping people out.
i wouldnt unless you feel he wouldnt know how to gather the information, either way protect it as much as you can
