2nd possible tsunami! Warnings broadcasted.

NEW DELHI, India (Reuters) -- The state government in India's Tamil Nadu state, one of the areas hardest hit by Sunday's Indian Ocean tsunami, issued a tsunami alert on Thursday and warned people to leave coastal areas.

Police said aftershocks in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, near the centre of the huge earthquake that caused Sunday's tsunami, were "likely" to cause high waves.

Webmaster_Logic 12-29-2004 11:35 PM

baddog 12-29-2004 11:41 PM

It takes 4-5 hours for the waves to hit India from the epicenter of the quake. Not sure when these aftershocks hit but I'm guessing very recent as it was the top headline on the cnn website.

Centurion 12-29-2004 11:46 PM

I feel badly for all the OTHER places that will get NO warning if indeed a 2nd one hits.

They've been through hell..they don't need Hell Redux.

yeah, KRL posted a list of recent aftershocks, and they had a 9.0 on the list.

Let me guess, you dropped Geophysics 100 in week two and took H4X0ring 400 instead?

The Adult Broker 12-30-2004 01:37 AM

I just overdosed on CNN coverage of this disaster, reminded me of 9/11. couldn't watch anymore , over 80,000 dead already, geez...

The Other Steve 12-30-2004 02:36 AM

I just read a report of a small aboriginal group whose ancestors have lived on one of the Andaman Islands for at least 60,000 years. Before the tidal waves struck they think there were 250 of these reclusive people - now they can't find one. :(

baddog that 9.0 was the last one on the list.. and the list was in order from most recent to first.. so i think that was the original one that started the whole thing

Yeah, it keeps getting worse :(

Centurion 12-30-2004 03:08 AM

So far..no report of high waves striking anywhere which IS good news.

Anyone else heard anything different?

Centurion 12-30-2004 03:10 AM

Latest from CNN:

PORT BLAIR, India (CNN) -- Despite the apparent absence of any major seismological activity, Indian authorities have ordered people in coastal areas to head for higher ground, four days after giant waves triggered by a massive earthquake killed at least 10,000 Indians.

According to the USGS Web site, the most recent aftershock from Sunday's 9.0-magnitude quake happened around 10 a.m. Thursday New Delhi time (11:30 p.m. Wednesday ET), measuring 5.3 in magnitude -- a moderate quake. It was centered near Indonesia's Sumatra island.

There have been more than 70 aftershocks recorded on the Web site from Sunday's quake. The strongest measured 7.1, but most have been between 5 and 6 in magnitude.

:error

Correct.

Of course it's much more fun to panic. :winkwink:

xclusive 12-30-2004 06:12 AM

Thing about it is that it really could happen at any moment and anywhere in the world. You think the whole earth wobbling like it did isn't going to shake up things all over? Should be an interesting few years...

Alexander D Great 12-30-2004 07:10 AM

I heard on the news that the aftershocks are (statistically) around 1.5 weaker than the original earthquake.. This is of course the maximum they reach, so i'd guess a 7.5 would be the max, however most are a lot weaker.

good thing this time they issued an alert!

foxylady 12-30-2004 07:37 AM

too bad let's pray not to happen again :Oh crap
