I don't get you Americans

I was just watching CNN, Bush press conference concerning the Azia disaster.
Bush is gonna send military guys upthere to help out.
I don't get it, where do you people keep digging up that military personel? It seems like half your population is in the army. Is it so that everybody knows atleast 1 person in the army in the US? Can imagine it has to be, you guys have a HUGE army lol

budz 12-29-2004 08:52 AM

our army is all clones, didn't you know?

btw how many signups did you get from thehun listing?

FunForOne 12-29-2004 09:04 AM

All Americans are in the Army.

Dont you remember the democrats lieing to all the college kids about everyone being drafted if President Bush was re-elected?

It happened, we all got drafted!
I'm learning how to drive tanks!

Total military personnel on September 30, 2003, was 1,434,377. This means that 17.6 percent of U.S. military forces were deployed on foreign soil at that time.. assume we sent another 8-10% to iraq/afghanistan we still have 75% or so of our troops at home. I think our military is at around 1.7 million people now, im not totally sure on that i couldnt find any recent numbers on it. China's army is at 2.5m (largest in the world)

what I dont get, is indonesia is the largest muslim country, and they have repeatedly been anti US in their stance, so why should we help that country in particular?

what exactly do we owe them? and why? were they not dancing in their streets after 9/11 ? chanting down with America? FUCK THEM!!!!

now as for the other countries, I think that is where ALL of the money or goods or manpower coming from the US should go.

in a situation like this its purely humanitarian. As much as we'd like to say fuck you american haters we can't. If we did we'd look like elitist assholes and that'd turn even more of the world against us. We're one of the few countries who have the resources to help out in a major disaster like this, we're pretty much obligated

In typical Bush fashion he speaks before he counts ...

I don't think the American military is a bottomless pit and while I congratulate him on sending personnel I wonder what would happen if a reallly BIG crisis fell on his lap? One that required 10's of thousands of troops? Pull that many out of Iraq? Hmm

we still have tens of thousands of troops at home, only about 25% of our military is on foreign soil ATM

I don't know many countries that have 1/4th of their total military capacity in foreign countries. I'm not saying that it's bad though, if you guys wouldn't have done that in WWII i would have been under german dictatorship by now lol BUT don't you guys ever wonder who's gonna keep paying for that?

Wiggles 12-29-2004 10:03 AM

Don't blame the victims because some fools were dancing in the streets. Radical Islamists and Muslims there do not represent the entire populatio.
Do you really expect Bush to stand in front of the nation and say "well, we've decided to sit this one out because some Indonesians were happy at 9/11"?

Besides, in a situation like this where so many lives are at stake petty differences (and even not-so-petty differences) need to be put aside.

And I hope that you're comments about the fact they are the "largest Muslim country" doesn't imply the US shouldn't help on that fact alone? Unless you've been brainwashed by your nation's fear mongers Muslims are not terrorists and do not condone it in any way. To imply all Muslims or Islamists are not worthy of aid because bin Laden happens to share their basic religious values is an ignorant and dangerous belief .. and it doesn't take a genius to see in America's own history what damage this line of thinking caused (if you don't know what I mean, just watch Mississippi Burning).

If that number is true, what the f**k are they doing at home while their comrades are getting multiple tours in Iraq? I'd hate to think that the US has been holding back when it's been clear for over a year that more troops are required in Iraq - even just to give those there a break!

I'm pretty sure the UK numbers are similar in their foreign soil deployment (percentage wise) but aside from that not many nations do peace-keeping as we do. We have troops in 70% of the worlds countries doing various duties. No need to wonder who pays for it, tax dollars compromise the majority of it.

not all troops are "battle ready", but you'd really need to ask the DOD and Congress that question

It takes 6 months to two years to train someone to fight in Iraq. They are training people now to take over for those who are having more than one tour.

Better to have them help people instead kill them. :2 cents:
