Halloween & Kids
As a father of 2 boys 10 & 12, I was hit with the this question last night. "Dad, do we still get to go trick or treating, with all this talk about Anthrax ??"
Well mrs Lightning and I hadn't really thought about this..... Is it being to paranoid or is it just being a cautious parent to allow or dissallow them to go our trick or treating??? We are really torn here. It's not the actual candy that worries us, heck I can buy them a darn candy factory if they wanted, The problem is the possible threat of this damm Anthrax being on the wrappers of the candy??? What are all of your thoughts on this?? ------------------ Smile and Be Happy Lightning Free Hosting Gay Free Hosting Girls Host |
buy them a candy factory
|
|
well, if there's the possibility of anthrax on the wrappers, you would probably be looking at someone wearing gloves while handing out candy...
everyone is saying how life has to get back to normal and that we should go about our everyday routines, but personally, i'd rather be "safe than sorry" |
No such thing as paranoid when you're talking about protecting your kids. There's always some idiot out there with pins or razors anyway, this year who knows what the crazies will do. I hadn't thought about it until now, but I think I will just let my kids have a halloween party and invite their friends over.
RD |
Let them go trick or treating, just take precautions before eating the candy. I doubt anyone with bad intentions would put anthrax on the outside of wrappers for fear of harming themselves. Buy them a lot of candy, and have them swap there's with yours :-) But they can still have all the fun of Halloween. Maybe this plan needs to be tuned a little bit, but I think everybody still needs to get dressed up and have fun. Life is too short not to... |
I Think We Are Going To Take The Kids To The Comunity Center Or A Local Church This Year.. Dont Know How Yall Feel About That But Its An Option
|
My husband and I talked about this very thing last week before the kids could get to us with it and what we decided to do is have a little party type thing for them and a bunch of their friends so they could dress up and have fun but not have to deal with the whole trick or treat thing. I remember how much fun we had as kids getting to go trick or treating but times have changed and like it or not we must adapt to these changes.
We have been saying for a few years that this year we aren't letting them go..... but with the recent Anthrax scare in the company my husband is currently working in, I think this year we are sticking to that and not letting them go....... they'll be pissed but I just can't risk it this year. I vote get some of their friends together and have them a little party of their own. And YES I am a paranoid as hell Mom. Tam ------------------ Vector Force Hosting!! DialerHeaven has Active X! I hear your fear, but lets think about this, National News Achors, Senators, and a couple of dozens kids in (fill in the town you live)...Which doesn't fit the profile?
The antrax that is being used is not cheap and easy to make, so unless you live near alot of national figures it shouldn't be a concern and like I mentioned before, the common flu is MUCH more contagous and Deadly than anthrax. We don't get all worried about it. The chance for surving anthrax is 99.8%with antibotics. The flu you only have a 97% chance of living. 1person in the last 10 years has died of Anthrax, yet 1000s every year die of the Flu. So, I say Don't let the fear control you or they have won the war, regardless of how much military might we have, with just a Very few letters sent to "important" people. |
There have been what, maybe 10 verified cases throughout the entire USA? I would have to say your chances of getting any Anthrax tainted candy are rather slim. They probably have a greater chance of being run over by a drunk driver while trick or treating than being dosed with Anthrax.
I happened to be watching a program on the History Channel this morning, and they had a segment about Halloween when I was a kid (I hate when they put shit I lived thru on the History Channel, they should save that for the not so long ago channel) and they talked about how in the 70s there was a scare that went on for a while about people putting razor blades and pins inside apples, etc, and how all of a sudden everyone would take the goodies to the local hospital to be x-rayed. No kids were killed/harmed by the hidden blades, even though some were found. What was interesting, was the candy that was poisoned and actually killed children. Every single case resulted in it being a family member (mom or dad usually) that had poisoned the candy. Halloween is all about trust, both for the kids going to the doors of strangers, and people opening their doors to strangers. If we let these terrorists change our lifestyle, they win. I say let the kids decide if they want to trick or treat or not. Besides kids are a lot like dogs, they are usually a good judge of character. If they go to someone's door and that person is acting weird, like wearing a hazmat suit and handing out candy with tongs, they will probably say thanks but no thanks, and egg the house instead. ------------------ see me for free hosting of movie galleries, your domain, no banners, full FTP |
To me it's not totally about the Anthrax scare........ it's about how angry everyone is these days and how much worse it gets every year. You have drugs, razor blades....... you name it, with each passing year people get more angry and bitter.
And my husband DOES work for a Government agency, and they have had a couple of scares of Anthrax, I doubt very seriously anyone where I live even has knowledge of anything to do with Anthrax so I am not too concerned about this. But with the way things have gotten and being a mom, I get less and less trusting of people in general each day. It's mostly games people play just to be "cute" that make me more paranoid than anything resembling Anthrax. Tam ------------------ Vector Force Hosting!! DialerHeaven has Active X! Halloween in America this year will be a time of fun and a time to help get our minds off things..
Dont let this Anthrax thing hide the fact that today Americans are more close to one another in our comunitties than ever before. And by particpating in Halloween trick or treat activities in your coumunity helps not only your kids feel they are safe, but helps your comunitty get back to regular life and helps stop this scare caused by a very small group of assholes. Halloween trick or treat stuff is nowdays the only activity we realy share with our local comunities, and its more important to just the kids, its important to all of us if we wanna move on and try to feel strong and safe in our own neighborhoods. Just take more caution, inspect the candy closly as Im sure you have always done, and go to the doorstep with the kids to get a feel for each giver.. Trust me after they see your big body, any nut case will have second thoughts fucking with your kids! Wear a sopranos mask, and carry a baseball bat. |
Tam, I think I would have to agree with you, it's just a little to scary to think of being a fatal statistic in regards to our kids. All for 1 night of fun. I think we will come up with an alternative also, like a party or something.
Bone, you are also right, but then again "You Have Crabs"..LOLOL Hey Wizzo, I also hear what your saying, ..you must have forgotten where I live...30 minute drive to Downtown Washington, DC....Yikes?? ------------------ Smile and Be Happy Lightning Free Hosting Gay Free Hosting Girls Host [This message has been edited by Lightning (edited 10-19-2001).] |
maybe take them to a haunted house thing instead. And go buy lots of cand from the store and keep at home so they dont miss the actual candy!

See this is where the 12 year old puts a 15% big brother tax on the little brother and 12 year old encourages daddy to make mommy have some more lil brothers so he can retire in candy heaven.
|
I was going to take my three year old out, But I think we'll make other plans this year.
Unless you "KNOW" the neighborhoods very well, it probably is best to "make other plans". |
Our Halloween nights in my area tend to be terribly cold or rainy. Heck, sometimes we get snow. The thing is I believe a coat over a costume is a mortal sin. To rememedy that, I would take the kid to the mall where the kids "trick or treat" the stores.
Well, guess what? This year the mall decided NOT to do the halloween thing they've done for the past twenty years. Now my kid is far too old for the mall and barely young enough to trick or treat, but I think of those younger kids and parents. What will they do this year now that their safe Halloween haven got all paranoid? I mean c'mon you mall bastards! I can't believe some urban legend emails have such an influence! love, ------------------ tit, writer for: COZYFROG Submit your Free site, TGP or TGP2 gallery to the MowseBytes Newsletter BONEPRONE 4 LIFE |
My kids will be out in force getting the candy left behind those staying home afraid of the taliban boogeyman...
My kids know that we always inspect the candy at home before they get any. They know about not eating opened candy and such... When I was a kid, my mother was the same way..yet no one ever had problems..I guess it's all part of being a parent... I seriously doubt that if someone had anthrax they'd waste it on a few kids on Halloween... ------------------ Evil is as evil does http://www.darkdollars.com |
I've got two kids a 10 year old boy and 7 year old daughter....THEY are my life! For the first time I told them we would not be able to go trick or treating halloween night and I told them why! They seemed to understand....When it comes to my kids...better to be safe than sorry! I can always buy candy at the store for them...
|
How about send your kids to work in an effects shop where everyday is Halloween, then they'll just learn to hate Halloween like I have. Then they won't care that they missed halloween as a kid.
Better yet, just have your kids knock on your own door. Open it up, and give them candy then send them around the outside of the house. By the time they come back around, you'll have changed outfits, and when they knock on your door again, just pretend to be someone else. You can hand them candy all night, and you know it's safe. ------------------ RedShoe is: http://home.earthlink.net/~fxgrunt/g...fe-anim-01.gif BoneProne Family Member |
Damn.....what has this world come to? The End?
|
i've bought a shit load of candy so they damn well better visit
of course i only got the candy that i like just in case there are any leftovers http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif but to answer your question, even before all the terrorist attacks some shopping malls have been sponsoring a safe environment for Halloween kids can go from store to store and receive candy and the shopping malls decorate to add to the tone of the festivities i'm still fond of the traditional method of going door to door until your green garbage bag is too heavy to carry, but times they are a changing http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/frown.gif |
Yeah I remember the good old days of going out and filling up a huge pillow case of yummy candy. But as a mother of 2 young kids, I think this year we will do the mall thing, and maybe even a party here at the house...It's just a bit concerning at this time to even taks a chance...Theres alot of sick people out there, and some may pray on the current world situations to do something bad this halloween.
My 2 cents |
All I know is that I'm going to have a SPECIAL candy stash for any smart ass kids that decide to dress up like a arab/terrorist or Osama bin laden.
------------------ Up to $1.15 for an email |
Incidents of Halloween candy tampering (razor blades, etc.) have been widely over-reported. It's very rare. The last case I remember was like in 1978.
It would be hard to hand out Anthrax candy without a gas mask and gloves, unless the person handing out the candy wanted to risk their own health as well. If you want to guarantee the safety of your kids...take them to family and friends houses for trick or treating. Also businesses that hand out candy and any local children's museum or school that is having a Halloween festivel. I've already bought some candy to hand out to the kids...have to stock up on a lot more though...this neighborhood in Indianapolis gets hundreds of kids thru it. ------------------ PigPorn TGP Big Penis Webmaster Program |
Lightning you can make a game out of it -- have your kids dress up as the Anthrax cleanup crew -- those would be cool costumes... You can have them wear rubber gloves... Then when you get home you just throw out the candy. Who cares about the candy -- it's the Trick-o-Treat part that's the most fun -- running around through the neighborhood in the middle of the night...
I was pretty fortunate to live in a neighborhood w/ so many kids -- we had a blast. If you want to be extra careful -- maybe put together a neighborhood meeting about this (don't tell the kids) -- get to know the families that will be giving your kids candy -- have these families put a special sticker on their door (or something fun) so you know which homes are Anthrax-free. ------------------ http://thefly.net/flybump.gif Boneprone-4-Life Family Approved |
A haunted house is fun...!
Make your own haunted house and invite the kids over. The most fun was spending hours recording sound effects for the haunted house! Great memories... |
I don't think you should worry,
there are roughly 300 million people in North America, about 11 of them got sick, or something like that, which means that the probability of getting anthrax is much smaller than lets say getting hit by a car, so If you went with them last year, this year should be the same:0) Just my opinion, don't let the paranoia get to you |
I think it is so sad that such a nice and fun tradition now has to be considered as a possible "life or death situation" http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/frown.gif
Where and when does the madness end? http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/frown.gif In my opinion there is a higher risk of a child slipping or falling and hurting himself than getting anthrax. I don't want to make it sound like it is not a serious matter but if all human beings stop doing what they enjoy, and stop sharing joyful occasions, and live in fear...because there is 8 confirmed cases of anthrax...the terrorists win. I personally do not intend to let them win. My life and the lives I touch everyday...short or long, are not going to be based on fear if I can avoid it... I sure hope my little brothers and sisters don't start their young lives in fear...caution, sure...fear NO! Don't let the terrorist's attempt to make you live in terror be a succesful one. Difficult times can be difficult indeed or be the source of wonderful creativity, unity and joy... Lightning and Mrs. Lightning, I say make it very special!!! Gear the attention to making a special Halloween rather than an avoiding life threatening situations... I suggest the 4 of you with a few friends from the neighborhood get together, make the gameroom a hunted house and YOU be in charge of the candy. And don't tell the kids its because you're affraid of anthrax...tell them you want it to be super special cuz its time to CELEBRATE LIFE AND THE JOYS OF IT! http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif I certainly vote for an unforgettable halloween for my "nephews" and wish I could be there to enjoy it with all of you http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif Hugs to you both, Meshell |
Holloween is a question everywhere. I have a 7 year old daughter and even being in a small town have reservations about letting her go out trick-er-treating. The churches around here sponsor parties so I belive that is what we will go with
