Are there any solid business reasons to do this?
Anyone ever done it before?

There's no point. In some instances you may need to obtain a local business license. For example, a Delaware company is considered to be a 'foreign company' in your home state. To do business there (have offices, hire employees, etc.) you need to make it 'domestic' by obtaining a biz license from your local corporate commission office. -
If you were going to start a company that will sell franchises then this would be a good idea.Comment

But you don't incorporate a new entity with the same name all over again. You simply make your existing one a Domestic entity within that state.Comment

You may want to trademark the name
