CAR GPS Navigation Systems (pics)

Do any of you guys own a clip on GPS NAVI system? Does it get the job done?
They look nice and handy to me, but I never had much experience with them.

The next possible solution for me, would be to drop a 7" indash lcd and get a pinoeer dvd navigation system to feed it ... but I dont really want to fuck with my dash.

I have th etop one, the magellan 700 I think it is.
works awsome, better then I thought it would. I first used it on a rental car then decided to buy the same one, the 700 is basically the same one used by hertz rent a car.

Pornwolf 12-27-2004 09:54 PM

Fuck with your dash bro. They have Alpine LCD/Radio combos that take up the same space as a standard head unit. The screen folds and stores inside the dash.

Screaming 12-27-2004 09:56 PM

i would just buy one of those and leave your dash board alone for the moment, buy one and give it a try and if it sucks really bad return it, it wont take but a day or so to know if you want it or not

Yeh, I was gonna go all out on this new BM that I got. But BMWs just weren't made to be treated like that. The problem with BMWs, is the air vent is located right by the radio ... so if I replace it with an aftermarket unit, it's left off centered and out of place (unless I get the vent relocated).

I think I might just buy the unit locally, and return it if it doesn't do anything for me.

Thanks for the help.
Hopefully Wired Guy sees this thread too, since he's looking for a unit.

just curious but have any of you guys had direction problems when driving? I feel like I would never need one of those.

Yep, the one used by hertz rent a car saved our ass many times while down in FL.

Did you ever have any problems with the unit missing small streets and locations? I'm a bit concerned about this, since NY has a bunch of hidden and newly built locations.

B-Eazy 12-27-2004 10:07 PM

Thats super quality shit

Pipecrew 12-27-2004 10:11 PM

What kind of bimmer?

I have researched a ton on this subject because I wanted a navigation system in my M3..

First, not only does the navigation murder your dash, the Stock BMW radio is soo fucking huge, that all aftermarket gps systems that were put in, look like absolute shit.

second, the whole bmw system is tied into the radio, so when you put in the aftermarket shit, you lose alot of vital car electronics..

Personally I think the hand held and clipable ones in cars look very tacky..

I had my heart set on the Pioneer Avic-N1 until I saw it in a few beamers and how horrible it looked, and the thing is a huge heatbag, sticks out about an inch, just begging for someone to break your window and burn you for 2000 usd.

I live out in the county here in Arizona, my home is new (built last July), my house is not in the GPS but the house a block up is.
new streets are not in it, I think you can get a database update for it, I have to check, I keep forgetting to do that, but small streets are on it, ATM's, gas stations, most restaurants and so on are also on it. If you want to go to McDOnalds, just do a search for closest restaurants and it will tell you how fwr it is, select it and it will tell you how to get there from your current location. I love it. I got mine from cartoys.com for $989 last month.

Magellan RoadMate 700 is the one to use. I bought one for myself last year and I bought one for my parents and one for my brother as Christmas presents

Vitasoy 12-27-2004 10:28 PM

The Garmin StreetPilot 2620, is the way to go.

venus 12-27-2004 10:30 PM

Dont you ever go anywhere ?

I go to california (LA) a lot for horse shows and horse conventions, the GPS comes in handy when I want to go to a certain restaurant or what ever.

Having a GPS system in the car is critical! I have a horrible sense of direction and it's saved me many times. I was skeptical before I owned one, but now I think they are the absolute best!

Manowar 12-28-2004 03:08 AM

GPS systems are for girls.

Guys use maps, common sense, and sense of direction.

GPS is for relaxed drivers, maps are for being pissed off while driving

I have an e46 like yourself, and was faced with alot of the same problems.
I personally love my BM steering wheel controls, and a replacement just would not do. If you're looking for a clean setup, you should checkout www.navtv.com. I have a friend sponsored by navtv, and the quality is amazing.

I was also told to check into "tomtom" navi systems, but they fall under tacky as well.

BMW makes an addon kit to add a Navi to the dash without disrupting everything. Ask you BMW dealer for it.

It goes in between the stick shift and the storage compartments in the center of the dash. They make it for all the 3 series cars.

I had a BMW M3 with Factory Nav and it was awsome. (until someone stole the car and wrecked it).

im lookin at the 510 navman, dont go for the tomtom go, the maps are cool, but the device is hell, 5 mins to synchro with the sats and sloooooooow, its not that cheap, cant put it in your pocket and the newer cars all have trouble with heated windows (cant get the antenna to pick up the signal)

so forget tomtom, check the navman, theyre small, smart and fast :)

I have the top one also, if you get it make sure you download and updte the unit from thier website as it addeds a lot of new features to it. I love the unit and what makes it really nice is that I can move it from car to car, or pack it and use it on trips in strange cities.
