Wow... That is some crazy shit.

ytcracker 12-26-2004 10:39 PM

wow
good find krl

The Ghost 12-26-2004 10:39 PM

thanks! that was extremely informative

BV 12-26-2004 10:40 PM

Surfs up :(

Entropy 12-26-2004 10:40 PM

According to that animation, land stopped the 20 foot waves like a Klingon force field.

Entropy 12-26-2004 10:42 PM

How far inland did it go?

Greg Jacobson 12-26-2004 11:01 PM

Can anyone confirm that the waves were traveling anywhere near 500 KM an hour? The BBC reported that these waves can travel that fast.

They go about as fast as a jet airplane correct.

That explains why so many people got hit by the waves. By the time they saw the wave it was too late.

Illicit 12-26-2004 11:58 PM

wow that shows just how big of an impact that had...

KRL 12-27-2004 12:03 AM

Figuring the math here.

Each cubic mile of seawater weighs approximately 4.7 billion tons.

Mean ocean depth out there is about 2 miles.

The ground shift was 600 miles long.

Figuring a 10 mile width on the movement.

2 x 10 x 600 = 12,000 cubic miles x 4.7 Billion Tons = 57 Trillion Tons of Water was lifted up by the earthquake.

Bottom line on that equation? Don't fuck with Mother Nature.

was approx 6 miles deep hence so much more devastating

kmanrox 12-27-2004 02:12 AM

oddly enough, when i cum the same effects can be felt around the world

D Flower 12-27-2004 02:13 AM

What a horrible thing this was. What I've seen on the news has been horrifying.

Warden 12-27-2004 02:13 AM

And to think I almost had my wife convinced to get a place on the ocean. Damn it all to hell!

lol ... that's really a lot of power there . And we brag about our atomics bombs

Pornwolf 12-27-2004 02:19 AM

What's even sadder about the whole thing is that so many of the people hit by the tsunamis had no idea they were coming. :(

They expect an epidemic to hit the areas there since there will be no clean water and sewage is fucked for alot of people..

I think there will be massive malaria and shit like that, sad to say but I think ALOT more people will die this week...

Nathan 12-27-2004 02:42 AM

Just a tiny bit of clarification here...

1) The wave tops on open sea are not much higher than 2 meters. That is why you do not notice them until they reach the shore.

2) The 500km/h speed is on the ocean FLOOR on OPEN SEA.

3) The speed drops dramatically once it hits shallower water, and the wave then builds up.

This of course does not make it any less dangerous, but just wanted to point this out so everyone understood.

It really works just like the tsunami you see in Deep Impact. Just a (little) smaller. 14m (which the highest ones were as far as I know) is still extremely high of course. And these waves do not just get 14m high and come russing to you, they start small, so you do not notice them and then they hit shallower water, pull all the water away from the shore and build up to 14m in a matter of seconds, and then just hit the shore.

Good post. I basically knew this (I have a degree in Geophysics) but didn't have the energy to post it :drinkup

SABAI 12-27-2004 03:02 AM

this animation is geographically inaccurate. the epicenter of the quaque was in sumatra, way more south. the epicenter depicted here is located where the andaman islands are

just my 2 cents

SABAI 12-27-2004 03:07 AM

ooops sorry , the map is accurate , its the news reports that are not , all the news say its a quaque in sumatra but in fact most quakes as well as the strongest originated on the adaman islands ?

one more proof not to trust CNN and most news chanels

an article I read said something along the lines of the earthquake had the equivalent energy of 323 billion tons of tnt, or 2 million times the bomb dropped on hiroshima.
