Can you die from not going to sleep?

i havent been to sleep in about 2 days. been drinking coffee every hour. can i die if i dont go to sleep for a week?

potter 12-26-2004 04:33 AM

No.

(but since this message is too short)

You could die from being too tired and not aware enough of your surroundings. i.e. sticking a fork in the toaster, walking out into traffic.

Manowar 12-26-2004 04:33 AM

Hasnt happened to me yet, and i barely sleep, so i'm guessing no

Pete 12-26-2004 04:34 AM

Yes you can.

sean416 12-26-2004 04:35 AM

the coffee might kill ya, but that would probably take longer then 2 days, maybe 70 years. Hopefully you'll get some sleep before then. :D

Platinumpimp 12-26-2004 04:37 AM

It has been proven that disturbed sleeping patterns will shorten your life. So you will not die from it instantly, if you find that a relief. :pimp

jukeboxfrank 12-26-2004 04:38 AM

yes you sure can but it takes about 100 days without any sleep.

woj 12-26-2004 04:38 AM

after a while you will just pass out, and probably wake up with a huge headache...

One of the possible side effects of a continued lack of sleep is death. Usually this is the result of the fact that the immune system is weakened without sleep. The number of white blood cells within the body decreases, as does the activity of the remaining white blood cells. The body also decreases the amount of growth hormone produced (8). The ability of the body to metabolize sugar declines, turning sugar into fat. One study stated that people who sleep less than four hours per night are three times more likely to die within the next six years (11). Although the longest a human has remained awake was eleven days rats that are continually deprived of sleep die within two to five weeks, generally due to their severely weakened immune system (10), (11), (12).

"-The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses. "

Sleep deprevation was used as a means of torture. You can suffer from hallunications, vomiting...you name it. Stop drinking coffee and go take a nap. You will get more accomplished when you are rested.

Don't soldiers go through crazy sleep deprivation as part of their training in boot camp? I heard stories of Navy Seals going through almost a week of no sleep in their hell week.

eventually your body will just shut down and you'll pass out on the spot. if you haven't taken care of yourself , IE: not eating, excessive physical activities, your heart 'could' give out though.
