Massive 8.5 Earthquake Hits Indonesia
Whoa, 8.5, that's one of the biggest I've ever heard in my lifetime.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqinthenews/2004/usslav/ Often that means a reciprocal quake ahead for the eastern side of the Pacific Plate on the US west coast. |
Shit, that is a big one
|
Holy shit. That is not good at all.
:Hollering |

If you know of any hot Indonesian chicks need someplace to stay in these trying times let them know they have a warm bed at Wolf's house.

8 more quakes over 2 hours in the 6 range.
|
HOLY SHIT! THERE ARE GFYers OVER THERE!
I know there are at least a couple of well-known ones who live in Thailand... I hope they're all right. :eyecrazy |
Damn that sucks. I hope everyone os OK and that those effected where prepared for it.
|
Damn I remember a big one, like that back in 94 that hit NY

Huge 30 foot tidal waves are innundating fishing villages. Over 160 people reported washed out to sea and drowned..
|
That's one big ass earthquake. Biggest in about 40 years they say. Just had another 8.5 a few days ago near Tasmania.
Indonesia is the largest muslim country on Earth I think. I can see a secret Earthquake Machine tunneling underground causing these things with George W. at the wheel. Seriously, the tsunamis from a quake that big could be scary. Two huge quakes like that in a week means we're lucky in the states as that relieves pressure on the plates that we normally get. Let's hope for the best for folks over there. |
400 people dead now. 100,000 people displaced from their homes by the water and presumed washed into the ocean.
|
A few moments after the first earthquake, a second shook Banglidesh and one of these quakes sent a tidal wave 1400 km to Sri Lanka.
|
Fucked up shit....Mother nature is pissed off at us
|
Wow, the USGS just raised it to an 8.9 on the richter scale.
:sadcrying |

Its now been rated at 8.9! :(

Wondering why people get banned on this board for calling others "Pedo" but someone like the mega idiot DarkJedi is still allowed to post...
|
7,200 reported dead and 1,000,000 lost homes.
|
I think the death toll will go up much higher than it is now. At least double. What a shame.

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh Get real. They're good at coming up with exotic weapons systems, but not this good. I hardly think we've got earthquakes in our weapons arsenal now. |

300 Sri Lankan convicts escape as tsunami destroys jail:
At least 300 prisoners escaped from a high-security jail in southern Sri Lanka today after it was destroyed by tidal waves that killed more 400 people and left many more missing, police said. The prison in Matara, 160 kilometres south of the capital, Colombo, was battered by the waves and the inmates took advantage of the natural disaster to flee, a police official said. "About 300 inmates have escaped," the official said. http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems...2/s1272459.htm |

To put the power of an 8.9 quake in perspective. Its the equivalent of approximately 30 Billion Tons of TNT going off at once.
That's equal to 60 Trillion Pounds of dynamite. That is one hell of a Kaaaaabooooooooooom |
A nuclear bomb is equal to 32 Million tons of TNT in comparison.
|
This is just nuts. Check out this map to get an idea of how huge this earthquake was. It shows the areas affected by the tsunami.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/bsp.../img/image.gif I mean, even Somalia? By the way, Sumatra is the island west of Malaysia. That's fucked up. Last report i saw said the death toll was at over 10 thousand now. |
The tsunami waves barreled nearly 3,000 miles across the ocean to Africa, where at least nine people were killed in Somalia.
Sunbathers on the beaches of the Thai resort of Phuket were washed away. A group of 32 Indians ? including 15 children ? were killed while taking a ritual Hindu bath to mark the full moon day. "All the planet is vibrating" from the quake, said Enzo Boschi, the head of Italy's National Geophysics Institute. Speaking on SKY TG24 TV, Boschi said the quake even disturbed the Earth's rotation. About 170 children at an orphanage were feared dead after tidal waves pounded it in Mullaithivu The huge waves struck around breakfast time on the beaches of Thailand's beach resorts ? probably Asia's most popular holiday destination at this time of year, particularly for Europeans fleeing the winter cold ? wiping out bungalows, boats and cars, sweeping away sunbathers and snorkelers, witnesses said. "Initially we just heard a bang, a really loud bang," Gerrard Donnelly of Britain, a guest at Phuket island's Holiday Inn, told Britain's Sky News. "We initially thought it was a terrorist attack, then the wave came and we just kept running upstairs to get on as high ground as we could." "People that were snorkeling were dragged along the coral and washed up on the beach, and people that were sunbathing got washed into the sea," said Simon Clark, 29, a photographer from London vacationing on Ngai island. On Phuket, Somboon Wangnaitham, deputy director of the Wachira Hospital, said one of the worst hit areas was the populous Patong beach, where at least 32 people died and 500 were injured. Another survivor on Phuket was Natalia Moyano, 22, of Sydney, Australia, who was being treated for torn ligaments. "The water kept rising. It was very slow at first, then all of a sudden, it went right up," Moyano said. "At first I didn't think there was any danger, but when I realized the water kept rising so quickly, I tried to jump over a fence, but it broke." On Phi Phi island ? where "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed ? 200 bungalows at two resorts were swept out to sea. "I am afraid that there will be a high figure of foreigners missing in the sea and also my staff," said Chan Marongtaechar, owner of the PP Princess Resort and PP Charlie Beach Resort. |

I think this is going to tally to horrendous numbers once communications are restored and teams go in to assess the actual damage and loss of life. |
