Anyone ever pay to get listed on Altavista? How many hits would you get from that? I was thinking about doing it but thought I would ask first. Does anyone know where I get get some info on purchasing search engine listings in the top ten or so?

I haven't bought AV listings but I buy some inktomi and goto. What I've heard about purchased AV listings is that traffic is generally low, tweaking the page so it ranks high still requires a lot of SEO for AV, no guarantee of high rank. AV traffic ain't what it used to be.

If you want guaranteed top ten, you have to go the GoTo/Overture route, which is risky if you aren't good at building exactly the right type of page to convert your traffic with. But you can agree to pay $2-3 per hit and get very targeted traffic and a top listing for a lot of keywords. Just make sure you specify in your title that it's $2.95 (or whatever) to get in and your clicks are liklely to give you a good profit.

Most SE's now have ways to buy top of the page links, but I haven't tried them.

Rrright. That's what I always thought although I didn't try.

AV sucks for sure, letting people pay just for INCLUSION in a 500 million url database and then displaying 50 of their own sponsor links at the top of the results shows how they lost faith in the internet and how they try to sqeeze out the last penny untill they close doors.

I use several of the PPC engines and iam doing quit nice, I use 7search , goto , epilot , findwhat and Kanoodle.

But you have to know how to sell and what keywords that are succesfull.
