google groups who has one?

who's started to play around with the new google groups beta?

anyone have a group i just started one up

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/teenpics/

i like the feel a lot better than yahoo's groups

but it definately lacks some key features such as being able to post pictures in your messages...

It looks clean though and seems pretty easy to manage i'm gonna play around with it anyone else toying around?

my old thread got deleted cause of the switch

any of you guys have any links to some good reading on this topic?

jacked 12-22-2004 12:21 PM

So did my reply, lol.
I hope the traffic is better than Yahoo's....I have a group with almost 3000 members and I've gotten a single sign-up from them-and that's amateur girl, which you would think would have better sales.

davethetruth 12-22-2004 12:27 PM

I've got a couple, but no new members yet. I guess somehow people are getting 50-100 members without doing anything. I hope they turn into something we can exploit, lol.

with that many members i would hope the traffic would convert...

do you put a lot of time into it or do you just let it sit there and work itself?

i guess if you market it to the surfer the right way i'm trying to do it from their point of view rather than webmaster selling to surfer, trying surfer to surfer... i dunno if deceptive marketing like that works but i guess i'll find out

Yeah, I expected better from them, too.
It's an amateur girl group that I run myself, as the girl, so I don't know how much more personal it can get. I worked it for a while and then I got frustrated with the lack of response, so I don't put much time into it anymore. I'd rather spend my time on my paying members. :2 cents:

jacked 12-22-2004 12:45 PM

are they going to be keeping these groups or once google groups 2 is out of beta will they start from scratch?

wow i'm suprised, no wonder you had so many members that makes sense now that it was a group for you amateur site. I would think that it would have a more positive response as they think or are speaking to the girl on the site.

siccmade 12-22-2004 01:02 PM

My conversions on Yahoo groups traffic is off the hook...

I'll have to look into these google groups!

Antonio 12-22-2004 01:03 PM

I have more than hundred Google groups already and couple of thousands Yahoo groups. I'm sory but what do you expect from a group with 3000 memebers only? 5 signups a day? If your goup receives lots of traffic (check how many new members you get a week) the best you can do is place a big fat link in the 'description' area.

BackToMine 12-22-2004 01:18 PM

Lets sell each other our users email addresses and bulk import them into the invitation list.

$0.5/email address

:conehead not a bad idea but i think it would be a more productive group if you built it up from scratch rather than just take any e-mails and dump them into the group

pood 12-22-2004 01:33 PM

do you guys have groups all under one account?

If that a good idea? Or do you guys have multiple gmail accounts and make a few few each account?

I've got them all under my one account. It's to early to tell what will be best imo. It's still in Beta testing phase.

davethetruth 12-22-2004 01:41 PM

Fukers are already spamming my groups with their stores!!!!

each account can only create 6 groups
but you can transfer ownership of a group by granting it to someone and removing your own

eg.
create master google groups account
create 10 dummy google group accounts
create 6 groups under each dummy account (60groups)
transfer ownership to the master account
close all dummy accounts

i've created them under one account i haven't made 6 yet but i guess thats the limit from what you guys say.

i also wonder the benefits of having them under one account if they group the groups differently when they are all under one account.

Wow, great idea!

Will google be keeping these groups up after the beta is over?

I hope google doesn't ban a master account though, I think having a couple of different accounts..maybe for one for different niches is a good idea.

But I'm going to be snatching up some good group names!

jacked 12-22-2004 01:46 PM

yeah i definately wouldn't let anyone post set it to allow members only to post but anyone can read the archives.

How do I control whether my group appears in Google Groups search results?

To control whether your group appears in Google Groups search results, click the ?Manage group? link on your group?s homepage, then click 'Edit' in the ?Access Settings? box. Choose an option under ?Who can read the archive??, then click ?Save changes.? If you choose ?Anyone can read the archive,? your group?s messages will appear in general search results. If you choose ?Only members can read the archive,? your group?s messages won't appear in general search results unless a member of your group is performing the search. Note: this setting doesn't affect whether your group is listed in the directory.

Here's a tip if you want to collect emails - offer free download on ALL your sites in exchange of your serfers' emails. People just looooooove free downloads, it could be anything - just zip couple of hundreds of your links, tgp galleries, free sites etc. and let them download teh zip file.

Bad idea. You don't need gmail account to register new Google groups, you can use Yahoo emails for example. You can not register moe than 6 (?) Google goups a day using the same account.

Bad idea IMO - if your master account gets banned (closed) you're fucked.

this shit is new to me.

is there a delay on when a new group is browsable through the groups directory?

Kevsh 12-22-2004 02:49 PM

I noticed some layout issues with FireFox ... some posts are going into the AdWords making clicking on the Options impossible.

I'd like to see a few more features and the usability is terrible ...

I shouldn't complain: it's free and a good way to get free promotion :thumbsup

it takes 10 minutes for your posts to be archived into the search

Thanks for the tip. All the different accounts were starting to become a headache.

I have an email list (those would be interested in my group) from one of my sites... How should I invite them? Should it be an invitation email, or should I have it just automatically add 'em.

if you send them an invitation e-mail they have to click a link to join the group. if you just add them they receive all the posts and you can send them a welcome message so they know what they are being invited to.

i guess if you invite them using an invitation you know whos gonna be active in your group then again you never know when someones gonna open one of those mails and click around

just gonna have to play and see what gives you the best results i guess

fris 12-22-2004 03:47 PM

what are some good yahoo groups :p

jacked 12-22-2004 03:53 PM

what are some of the more popular google groups lol i've been searching around all day to see what type of different ways there is to market shit through these and how to advertise the group itself.

it's worth the time if you put the right amount of time into it i guess. you just have to stay on top of your group can't let it die off always keep updating.

it seems that non-breaking text (e.g. a long url) forces an overlap in the text of the message and the links on the right side. You may only see it if you're reading "wide" messages.

I expected more than one signup total, and I don't think that is unreasonable for a site that converts at 1:20 overall from second page uniques.

yeah it's definately not something to concentrate all of your time into but it's worth the extra few minutes it takes to manage the group a day... exposure is exposure...

chase, your groups has 3000 subscribers, it does not receive 3000 uniques a day. Out of these 3000 subscribers probably only 50 or so check out your group every day. It's like having a regular website which gets 50 uniques a day - you can't really make that much money out of it, can you?

BTW I'm not attacking you, or the site you're promoting - wishing you all the best with it :)

jacked 12-22-2004 10:30 PM

yeah for all 3000 of her members to all be active as in click on one of her links daily i highly doubt that... but its a good way to give some exposure to your sites and build a nice mailing list..

how are you guys doing that have started up groups?

i've got 20 members on this group right now started it up yesterday
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/teenpics

and i grabbed a few other pretty good keyword groups i wonder how big of a factor the actual group name has when they are searching i've tried a few times and have found that other groups get pulled even when typing in the exact spelling of the group. but it does get listed as a recomended site on top.

groups are pretty interesting.. :love-smil
