To register the 2nd domain name ever and have it be BBN.com is a travesty.

absolutely agree and even 100th domain NYNEXST.COM :) lol

rowan 12-21-2004 08:45 AM

Don't forget that the WWW didn't exist back then. Domain names were used mainly for boring things like email addresses. :)

I'm pretty sure BBN were heavily involved in some fundamental internet protocols we use today, such as BGP.

polish_aristocrat 12-21-2004 08:46 AM

huh?

domains were registered already in the 80's?

slapass 12-21-2004 08:49 AM

Pretty fucking cool. I just noticed not one of them made a name for themselves from being early.

Being first is not always the golden path people think it is.

xclusive 12-21-2004 08:50 AM

I would have registered every domain that kak_azn has ever thought of registering and then maybe we wouldn't have ever heard of him...

Pete-KT 12-21-2004 08:54 AM

Wow, not one person in the first 100 domains thought of registering a porn site name :)

"Sites" didn't exist in the 1980s... the WWW was born in the early 90s

Domain names were free until 1998.

Quote:

Before 1992, NSF performed many administrative tasks in regard to the non-military aspect of the nascent Internet. Among these tasks was the registration of domain names and the maintenance of the registry of names. However, in March 1992, NSF issued Solicitation 92-24 for a Network Information Services Manager for the Internet. NSF considered proposals from three firms that wished to assume the task of providing registration services for the non-military component of the Internet.

NSF chose NSI, and on January 3, 1993, the two entered into Cooperative Agreement No. NCR-9218742. The contract specified that, after a three month "phase-in" period, NSI would provide registration services for five years, with a six month "flexibility period" at the end. Therefore, the cooperative agreement that became effective on January 1, 1993, was due to expire on March 31, 1998, and has a flexibility period that will expire on September 30, 1998.

The original contract called for NSI to operate on a "cost-plus-fee" basis, meaning that NSI received reimbursement for its costs, plus a fixed fee that ensured the company's profit. Under this original contract, the costs and fees were paid by NSF out of its operating budget; users did not have to pay fees to register or to maintain domain names. The contract estimated that, over the five year life of the agreement, NSI would receive $4,854,061 in cost reimbursement and $365,278 in fixed fee profit. See Cooperative Agreement at Art. 8, ķA

V_RocKs 12-21-2004 12:22 PM

Actually that is part of the suit which allowed this to happen:

Quote:

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and Network Solutions, Inc. (NSI) today announced the end of the Internet Intellectual Infrastructure Fund portion of domain name registration charges. As a result, the annual fee for domain name registration, which has been $50 since fees were imposed in 1995, will decline to $35, reducing the cost of domain name registration by 30 percent. The change will be effective April 1, 1998.

Notice no MS in there. MS should die. They haven't innovated shit since they stole Apple's GUI and made it better. Really one of the worst companies in our history.

slapass 12-21-2004 12:32 PM

I must be an idiot as i doubt I could register a bunch of domains and be a billionaire if I had a time machine.

gxer 12-21-2004 02:04 PM

actually you don't need a time machine to register a decent
domains.

I did it cause i own another domain with word pimp :) so i started
