How do you check the speed of a website to see how fast your host is?

I want to check the speed of my current websites and compare them to the speeds of other sites being hosted by other hosts. How do I do this?

I am sure there are websites out there that u can just post the URL of a site and they can tell you the speed of the bandwidth. A URL and a quick explanation on what to look for would be appreciated!

Try this tool http://www.alertsite.com/cgi-bin/tsite3.pl

Do you know what the average speeds are supposed to be or great speeds?

You cant trust those things, everything depends on a lot of major factors.

The only real way to actually find out how things are loading, is by giving people test download links, or having a mass number of people visit the EXACT SAME site on differant hosts.

thanks for the tool. What is a traceroute? I hear people talking about that all the time, what exactly is it? And what is a good traceroute and what is a bad one?

traceroute is the route it goes through to get to your site. If someone in london, england wants to check out a site thats hosted in houston, texas... it probably goes through a multitude of networks.. so a traceroute is the map or directions it took to get to your server.

I dont know fi theres such thing as a good/bad traceroute, I'd assume the less places it had to go to get to your site, the better.

hops dont make that much of a differance, as long as latency (ping times) are relatively normal.

For webhosting (IE: websites etc) 120ms and under should be fine in terms of page loading speed and download rate.

a traceroute shows the 'path' you take to get to that certain point in the internet.

total time depends on how many thumbs and graphic there is on the site, if you submit a blank site with a few links, of course the total time will be low...

very helpfull replies so far, thanks!

I gather that ping or latency is the best way to find the speed of a host?
