Suprnova.org calls it quits in wake of BitTorrent suitsThe Associated Press
Updated: 4:36 p.m. ET Dec. 20, 2004NEW YORK - One of the Web's most popular file-sharing sites has shut down less than a week after Hollywood announced a flurry of lawsuits against operators of such Internet servers.

A note posted on Suprnova.org, which facilitated sharing among users of the BitTorrent program, said the site was "closing down for good." The collection of links to downloadable files, including music, movies and books, was taken down.

"We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything," the statement said.

Reached via Suprnova.org's chat room, the site's anonymous operator refused to comment on why it had shut down.

Last week, movie studios sued more than 100 operators of U.S. and European sites that host BitTorrent links but did not name the defendants.

Newsgroups was tight when I was 16 or so,(no I'm not joking).. I'm 24 now, the cool thing about bit torrent for everyone, is that you can goto 1 site (like Suprnova and the thousand others), download a small file, which at any time you can run and it will get what you need... Newsgroups, good luck searching through all those millions of posts, boring boring boring, however, typing in a website, then getting what u want instantly...priceless

Again, I too use newsgroups from time to time. I collect a lot of out of print music and most of it isn't on newsgroups. I have no interest in stealing things I could easily go to the store and buy or things that haven't been released yet.

What I collect hasn't been in a store in at least 10 years and rarely appears on ebay.

I am just honest. I agree with you though, I am in the minority. Why do people think that just because they CAN steal it, they should. If you don't have the money or are too cheap to fork it over, you shouldn't get the merchandise. I want a new Corvette but I don't have the money. Does that mean I should steal one? Anyone who says BT sucks simply has not used it enough or perhaps used a client that their system had a problem with. Like with Kazaa, WinMX and other systems it largely depends on what you are trying to download. If it's the latest hit that everyone is trying to download or an extremely rare file only 1 or 2 people have you certainly aren't going to have it as smooth as a file that is better seeded and has been around long enough that there aren't many more times downloaders compared to seeds.

The torrents on suprnova or any other site are not "married" to the site, meaning you can post a copy of the torrent anywhere else (or send it by any means) and it will allow people to continue hooking up to download. This makes it perfect for fans of TV series that have various boards/chats. Since you are not searching the files of other downloaders it makes it more anonymous/secure and my favorite thing is that fake files are basically unheard of.

To be honest, suprnvova.org was always the second place I would go looking for particular items, since the stuff I download isn't the latest/greatest everybody's doing it files that the RIAA and MPAA are itching to sue you over. My first torrent stop is usually good ole Google and the way I've found many treasures is to simply search:

"what I am looking for" +torrent

I've used ABC (Another BitTorrent Client) exclusively for probably a year now after trying at least a dozen of them and it works very well for me. My favorite thing to use it for is downloading multiple episode sets of TV series that are not available on DVD.

If you are trying to download full-length movies, you may find faster ways but it's hard to beat the stability and security of BT, and especially the fact that you don't spend hours downloading only to find the file is fake, corrupted or mislabeled.

I'm a firm believer in "if you like it, buy it". BT has led me to purchases of things I would have never known about and also enjoy many things not or no longer available commercially.

BitTorrent is completely un-anonymous. Anybody can connect to the tracker and see who's downloading shit. Usenet completely destroys bittorrent, in every possible way. newzbin.com is your friend.

I just searched for the last 5 things I downloaded via bittorrent at newzbin.com and not one was available. I agree newsgroups are great if you are stealing the latest blockbuster or popular music but torrents being able to be categorized/archived/sent anywhere makes them much more available, not to mention that many specific shows/genres have sharing communities using BT and people distributing independent work can leave a page up as long as necessary with torrents. Next time you don't find what you're looking for at newzbin.com try going to Google and typing in
"what you are looking for" + torrent
